Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Name

The federal team sealed Mercy Creek.

Nobody entered without authorization.

Nobody removed anything.

Every record was photographed.

Every computer imaged.

Every box catalogued.

But the appearance of Logan's name beside the word ASSET changed the investigation.

Agent Sloan explained that they were reconstructing the ledger's meaning.

“Asset doesn't necessarily mean stolen child.”

Joanna stared at her.

“Then what does it mean?”

“We don't know yet.”

Logan looked frustrated.

“Everything about me was decided before I could speak.”

Joanna reached for his hand.

“You're here now.”

He squeezed it.

“That's because you are.”

Their son slept in a stroller beside them.

The irony wasn't lost on either of them.

The same hospital where Logan's identity had been stolen was where Noah had been born.

The same place that began the deception had unknowingly produced the evidence that ended it.

Investigators traced the ledger.

The financial network led to private trusts.

One trust belonged to a man named George Wright.

Robert's older brother.

But George was officially dead.

The death certificate was twenty-two years old.

A federal investigator reopened the record.

It was fraudulent.

George Wright was alive.

Living under a different name.

And he owned a private security company.

The same company that had contracts with several hospitals.

Including Mercy Creek.

Joanna felt a chill.

“So he's still operating.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Possibly.”

“How do we find him?”

“Follow the money.”

The team did.

Payments led to a property in Pennsylvania.

A secluded estate.

Federal agents surrounded it before dawn.

The house was empty.

But they found computers.

Documents.

Photographs.

And a wall covered with pictures of children.

Not missing children.

Children who had been placed with wealthy families.

Some had photographs taken every few years.

Every child had a file.

Every file contained a price.

Joanna stood in the room.

Her heart broke.

“This is a marketplace.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.”

Then she found a file.

SUBJECT: LOGAN WRIGHT

Inside were photographs.

Baby Logan.

Toddler Logan.

Teenage Logan.

His school.

His first job.

His relationship with Joanna.

Everything.

The final report was only six months old.

SUBJECT REMAINS UNAWARE OF TRUE PARENTAGE.

Joanna looked at Logan.

“They were still watching you.”

He nodded.

“And when I met you…”

He stopped.

“They already knew.”

Joanna suddenly understood why Robert had reacted so strongly when he saw her name.

The organization had been monitoring both of them.

Their relationship had threatened to expose old records.

Their child made it worse.

Noah's birth had brought the past back into the light.

But why?

What made Noah important?

The answer was hidden in a financial file.

Noah had been listed in a projection.

POTENTIAL DESCENDANT — HIGH PRIORITY.

Joanna felt sick.

“This is insane.”

Rebecca read further.

“The group was tracking bloodlines.”

“Why?”

“Assets.”

“Children.”

“Property.”

“Inheritance.”

“Genetic markers.”

Joanna looked at Noah.

“They were planning for the future.”

“Yes.”

The network wasn't simply trafficking babies.

It was manipulating family lines.

Some children were placed where they could eventually inherit wealth.

Some were adopted by influential families.

Some were used to create connections between businesses.

And Robert Wright had used Logan to protect his own legacy.

Joanna finally understood why Noah's birthmark had terrified him.

The mark was a clue.

A hereditary marker shared by several families within the organization's records.

If investigators connected the marker to the original families, they could prove the identities of children who had been stolen.

Noah was not important because of money.

He was important because his existence carried evidence.

His birth proved that Logan's true lineage had survived.

And now the organization knew.

The investigation became a race.

Find George.

Protect the children.

Expose the remaining network.

And uncover the final secret hidden beneath Mercy Creek.

Joanna stood beside Logan.

He looked exhausted.

She placed her hand in his.

“We do this together.”

He nodded.

“For Noah.”

“And for everyone else.”

Outside, federal vehicles filled the road.

Inside the estate, investigators opened one final room.

Behind a steel door was a safe.

Inside was a single envelope.

On the front, someone had written:

FOR THE LAST WRIGHT.

Rebecca stared at it.

Then slowly handed it to Logan.

He opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

A hospital room.

A young Robert Wright.

A newborn baby.

And behind them—

a woman Joanna had never seen.

Except she had.

She was standing in the photograph beside her mother.

May you like

And written on the back were four words:

She knows everything.
