Chapter 7 - The Empty Bedroom

Elena’s room was empty. The window was open. The bed was untouched. Mia was still asleep in the next room. Adrian woke her gently.
“Where’s Mommy?”
Mia sat up. “She went outside.”
“What time?”
“Before sunrise.”
Adrian checked the security cameras. Elena had walked out alone. She was carrying a small suitcase.
He ordered his people not to chase her. Instead, he followed the location of the tracker hidden in her phone. It led to an old church on the edge of the city.
Elena was kneeling inside.
A man sat beside her.
The scar near his eyebrow was unmistakable.
Adrian entered.
The man stood. “Mr. Vale.”
“Who are you?”
“Elias Mercer.”
“Why are you meeting my employee?”
Elias smiled. “Because she isn't your employee.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Elena stood. “Adrian, please.”
Elias placed a folder on the table. “Your payroll system has been compromised for two years. Someone inside Blackstone is moving money into criminal accounts.”
Adrian opened the file. Names appeared. One of them was his assistant, Victor Kane.
But another was even more shocking.
Adrian Vale.
His own signature appeared on documents authorizing the transfers.
“That’s impossible.”
Elias shook his head. “The signatures were forged.”
“Then why did you bring this to Elena?”
“Because she was the first person who noticed.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“You knew about the fraud.”
“I knew the numbers were wrong. I didn't know who was behind them.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid your own people would kill me.”
Adrian looked at Elias.
“Who is funding this?”
Elias pushed over a photograph.
It showed Victor shaking hands with a man Adrian had not seen in ten years.
His own uncle. Richard Vale.
Richard had been presumed dead after a plane crash.
Mia looked from one adult to another. “Can I say something?”
Everyone went quiet.
“I don't understand why adults think kids don't notice anything.”
Elena smiled sadly. “What do you notice?”
“When people are lying.”
Adrian almost laughed. “And how do you know?”
Mia pointed at his face. “Your eyebrows.”
For the first time that night, Adrian laughed for real.
The next hour changed the way they looked at one another. The crisis was no longer a rumor or a suspicion. It had names, dates, money trails, witnesses, and consequences. Adrian ordered nothing. He listened. Elena checked every document herself. Mia stayed close enough to hear the adults but far enough to feel safe. When a new piece of evidence appeared, everyone stopped and read it together. That simple act became a symbol of the new family they were building: no hidden papers, no private decisions, no one left outside the truth.
The room fell silent.
Then Elena said, “We can keep running, or we can end this.”
Adrian looked at her. “Together?”
“Together.”
It was a simple word, but it changed the plan. Nobody would be a pawn anymore. Not Elena. Not Mia. Not Victor. Not even Adrian.

Adrian leaned against the table. “Tell me one thing.”
Elena met his eyes. “What?”
“Are you afraid of me?”
She thought about the question. “I was.”
“And now?”
“Now I’m more afraid of what happens when good people stop asking questions.”
Adrian nodded slowly. “Then keep asking.”
