Chapter 15 - The Person in the Gray Coat
Willa met us at the sheriff’s office with her aunt. She had stopped pretending she could carry the secret alone.“The person in the gray coat was Adam,” she said.The answer was impossible. Adam had been dead.“The image was taken after the funeral,” Halpern said.“I know.”Willa opened her notebook to a page with two dates. “The camera’s clock was wrong. The file date is not the real date. Adam placed the camera before he died, but he came back to the pantry later than the system says.”Oren checked the metadata. The smaller device had captured the documents being hidden beneath the floor.“Why didn’t Sera tell us?” I asked.“She was afraid the device would expose her unauthorized access,” Halpern said.Sera joined the meeting by video. “I knew the company had been altering records,” she said. “I thought I could collect enough proof to force a settlement. Adam wanted the truth public. We disagreed.”“Did you send the messages?”“Some.”“Which ones?”“The warning about the floor. The photograph of the Voss meeting. The message about the camera.”“Who sent the photograph of Willa?”Sera shook her head. “Not me.”The smaller camera had captured a conversation that the visible one missed. Reed entered the pantry after Adam’s death and removed documents from beneath the floor. He was not alone. Dr. Voss accompanied him. They discussed creating a guardianship petition and using Miles’s medical history to support it.The audio was clearer than the visible camera’s recording.Reed said, “Morgan will do the visible part.”Voss answered, “She has to believe the child is protected.”Reed: “She has to believe the money is protected.”Voss: “And if Bell resists?”Reed: “Then we use the school.”The recording ended before they mentioned the inhaler. It established the larger plan, but we still needed evidence connecting Reed directly to the theft.Morgan’s statement and the visible footage supplied that connection. Her cooperation also revealed that Reed had told her where Miles kept the emergency case. He had learned the location from a photograph of my work bag taken in my shop.“How did he get the photograph?” Halpern asked.Morgan said he had shown it to her on his phone. The image included the blue case, the shop’s file cabinet, and a calendar with my weekly schedule.The shop break-in was no longer an attempt to find Adam’s notebook after the fact. Reed had been gathering information before the attack.Halpern searched Reed’s cloud account. It listed the trust shares, the acquisition deadline, and the projected payout.One line read: REMOVE TESSA BEFORE BOARD REVIEW.Another read: MILES EVENT MUST BE MEMORABLE.Reed was arrested at a hotel near the state line. He had a passport, cash, and a ticket to Vancouver. He did not resist. When Halpern read the charges, Reed looked past him at the television.“You have no idea what happens if the company collapses,” Reed said.“Workers lose jobs,” Halpern replied. “They don’t lose the right to be told the truth.”Morgan was arrested later that day on charges related to the medication theft, records access, forgery, and conspiracy. On one side he wrote SORRY. On the other he wrote SAFE.“Are people allowed to be sorry and still not be safe?” he asked.“Yes.”“Are they allowed to be safe and still not come back?”“Yes.”He thought for a while. “Willa can come back.”“Willa did not hurt you.”“She kept the backup.”We arranged for Willa to visit under supervision. She and Miles built the model airplane together. Willa apologized for not telling the truth sooner. Miles accepted the apology but did not pretend everything was normal.“You can call me if you’re scared,” he told her.“I know.”“But don’t take my inhaler.”She nodded solemnly. “Never.”The broader court hearing began the following week. The state asked that the trust remain frozen until the acquisition and fraud investigations ended. Marrow Health withdrew its offer rather than wait.That should have relieved me. Instead, I worried about the employees who had nothing to do with Reed’s decisions. Priya helped me create a plan to preserve the company’s service contracts under independent management, but the business was damaged.Evelyn offered to place her controlling family shares into a worker and community trust.“You don’t get to use generosity as another kind of control,” I told her.“Then help design the terms.”I agreed to review them, not to forgive her.The night before the hearing, Sera sent one final message.THE CAMERA PROVED THE HAND.
