Chapter 9

Daniel wanted Maya taken out of the state.
Ortiz arranged a secure home two hours away.
Julia drove the children there before dawn.
Daniel hugged them beside the car.
“I’ll come tomorrow.”
Maya clung to his coat.
“You promised you wouldn’t leave.”
“I know.”
“You’re leaving now.”
The pain in her voice almost broke him.
Ethan touched her shoulder.
“Dad has to stop the angry lady.”
Maya shook her head.
“Bad people come when he leaves.”
Daniel knelt.
“You’re right to be afraid. I made promises before, and I wasn’t there. But this time Aunt Julia and officers will stay with you every second.”
Maya took off the brass key and placed it in his palm.
“You need Mommy’s key.”
Daniel closed his fingers around it.
“I’ll bring it back.”
The memorial gala opened at seven.
Claire’s portrait hung above the stage.
Hundreds of guests filled the ballroom.
Police officers dressed as servers and security guards watched every entrance.
Daniel wore a microphone beneath his jacket.
Ortiz remained in a control room.
Caroline Reed’s photograph had been sent to every officer, but Daniel knew she could change her appearance.
Vanessa had learned that from her.
At eight fifteen, Ruth arrived under police supervision.
Her release had been granted in exchange for cooperation.
Guests whispered as she crossed the room.
Daniel met her near Claire’s portrait.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“Caroline contacted me.”
“When?”
“This afternoon.”
Ruth handed him a note.
COME TO THE GALA OR MAYA DIES.
Daniel stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell Ortiz?”
“Because the note said Caroline has an officer near the safe house.”
Daniel pressed his microphone.
“Ortiz, check Julia’s team now.”
No answer came.
His earpiece filled with static.
The ballroom lights flickered.
Daniel grabbed Ruth’s arm.
“Stay beside me.”
A video began playing on the large screen above the stage.
Caroline appeared.
She had gray hair now, but Daniel recognized her from the photograph.
“Good evening, Daniel.”
Guests turned toward the screen.
“Your family built this foundation on secrets,” Caroline continued. “Claire believed she could expose all of us and remain untouched.”
Daniel scanned the room.
This was a distraction.
Caroline was already inside.
The ballroom doors locked.
Guests began shouting.
Smoke poured from vents, but Daniel smelled no fire.
A panic device.
People rushed toward the exits.
Ruth pointed toward the stage.
A woman in a server’s uniform stood beneath Claire’s portrait.
She removed her wig.
Caroline.
Daniel pushed through the crowd.
Caroline held a small trigger in one hand and a syringe in the other.
“You remember this?” she asked.
Daniel stopped.
“What is it?”
“The medication Claire was supposed to receive.”
Ruth gasped.
Caroline smiled.
“I replaced it for weeks. Not enough to kill her. Just enough to make her weak and confused.”
“You made everyone believe she was paranoid.”
“Grant paid well.”
“Then you helped him kill her.”
“No. I helped myself.”
She lifted the trigger.
“Where is Maya?”
“Safe.”
“No child is safe with a father who never looks behind him.”
Daniel turned.
Marcus Reed stood near the ballroom doors in a police uniform.
He pointed a gun at Ruth.
The real officers could not see clearly through the smoke.
Marcus dragged Ruth toward the stage.
“Tell them to lower their weapons,” Caroline said.
Daniel pressed his microphone again.
Still nothing.
Ruth looked at him.
“Don’t protect me.”
Marcus shoved the gun against her neck.
Daniel raised both hands.
“She’s not the witness you want.”
Caroline’s eyes hardened.
“No. Maya is.”
“You’ll never reach her.”
Caroline laughed.
“We already did.”
She pressed a button.
A live video appeared on the screen.
Julia’s car was parked on a dark road.
The driver’s door stood open.
Maya’s rabbit lay on the pavement.
Daniel could not breathe.
Then Ethan appeared on-screen.
He was hiding behind the car, holding Julia’s phone.
He whispered into the camera.
“They took Maya.”
The video ended.
Caroline looked pleased.
“My husband arranged a second vehicle before coming here.”
“Where did he take her?”
“Bring me Claire’s memory card.”
“The police have it.”
“You made a copy.”
Daniel had.
Rebecca kept it in a safe at the foundation.
Caroline knew too much.
“Release the doors,” Daniel said.
“After I leave.”
“With Maya?”
Caroline smiled.
“She’ll disappear like her mother.”
Ruth suddenly struck Marcus’s arm with her cane.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Guests screamed.
Daniel charged.
He hit Marcus and drove him into the stage.
Ruth kicked the gun away.
Caroline pressed the trigger.
Explosions shook the ballroom doors, but the charges blew the locks rather than the building.
She had created an escape route.
Caroline ran backstage.
Daniel followed.
Ortiz’s voice returned through his earpiece.
“Daniel, Julia is safe. Maya was taken by a fake state trooper. Ethan hid and called us.”
“Track Julia’s phone.”
“Ethan slipped it into the kidnapper’s vehicle.”
Pride and terror collided inside Daniel.
Ortiz sent the location to his phone.
The signal was moving toward the river.
Daniel reached the loading area behind the ballroom.
Caroline jumped into a van.
Marcus ran after her, but officers tackled him.
The van accelerated.
Daniel entered a police vehicle with Ortiz.
They followed the phone signal toward the old bridge where Claire had died.
“She’s taking Maya there,” Daniel said.
Caroline wanted to finish the story where it began.
The signal stopped near the river.
Police surrounded the area.
Daniel saw the van beside the abandoned bridge.
Maya stood near the railing.
Caroline held her by the shoulders.
“Daddy!” Maya screamed.
Caroline raised the syringe.
“Stay back!”
Daniel stopped.
Ortiz and the officers spread out.
“You don’t need Maya,” Daniel said. “Claire’s evidence is already public.”
“No. The memory card is sealed. Prosecutors control it.”
“I sent copies to every major newspaper before the gala.”
Caroline’s confidence flickered.
“You’re lying.”
Daniel removed his phone slowly.
News alerts filled the screen.
Claire’s video had been released.
Rebecca had followed Daniel’s instructions the moment the ballroom doors locked.
Caroline read the headlines.
Her face twisted.
“You destroyed me.”
“You did that yourself.”
She pulled Maya closer to the edge.
Daniel saw Ethan crawling beneath the bridge railing behind them.
He had hidden in Ortiz’s vehicle.
Daniel fought not to look directly at him.
Maya saw her brother.
She did not react.
Ethan moved closer.
Caroline pressed the syringe against Maya’s sleeve.
Daniel raised the brass key.
“Claire left one piece of evidence that wasn’t copied.”
Caroline stared at it.
“The key?”
“It opens a second box.”
“What box?”
“The one under Claire’s grave marker.”
It was a lie.
But Caroline wanted to believe it.
Her grip loosened.
Ethan grabbed Maya’s ankle and pulled.
Maya dropped to the ground.
The syringe missed her.
Daniel ran.
Caroline reached for Maya, but Ethan shielded his sister.
Ortiz tackled Caroline before she could touch them.
The syringe rolled across the pavement.
Daniel fell to his knees and gathered both children into his arms.
Caroline screamed as officers handcuffed her.
“Claire ruined everything!”
Maya lifted her head.
“No.”
Caroline stared at the four-year-old.
Maya’s voice was small but clear.
“Mommy told the truth.”
Police lights flashed across the river.
May you like
For the first time in years, the bridge no longer belonged to the people who had killed Claire.
It belonged to the children who had survived them.
