Chapter 12 - The Locked Floor

The gala dissolved into shouting, camera flashes, and the hurried retreat of people who had applauded progress thirty seconds earlier.

Adrian led Olivia through the service hall while Marcus coordinated an exit. “Did you know Jake’s father was involved?” she asked.

“No.”

“You knew the tape existed.”

“I knew part of it existed.”

“You didn’t tell me it might include my family.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You never know until the worst moment.”

He stopped at a stairwell. “You want to be angry with me. Fine. But don’t confuse what I withheld with what I didn’t know.”

She hated that the distinction mattered.

Outside, reporters crowded the hotel entrance. A woman shouted, “Mr. Vale, did you exploit displaced families?” Another asked whether Olivia Parker was his mistress.

Adrian stepped in front of Olivia. “She is not available for comment.”

Olivia moved beside him. “I am.”

He looked at her, surprised.

She faced the cameras. “I’m an urban development professional. I’m investigating historical ownership records connected to the Harbor Renewal project. I will not discuss my private life, and I will not allow anyone to use it to distract from the facts.”

The reporters surged forward.

“Are you accusing Vale Meridian?”

“Are you dating Adrian Vale?”

“Did he give you confidential documents?”

Olivia held her ground. “Ask why a public project has no transparent accounting for the families it displaced.”

Adrian touched her elbow. “We’re leaving.”

This time, she allowed him to guide her to the car.

At Vale Meridian, the entire executive floor had been sealed. The doors were locked again, but now Olivia watched Marcus secure them from the inside.

“You promised,” she said.

Adrian looked at the doors. “I promised you would never be locked in without explanation.”

“Then explain.”

“There is a credible threat against everyone connected to the ledger. We are keeping the floor closed until the police arrive.”

“And if I want to leave?”

“You leave.”

He handed her a key card. “Your choice.”

She took it. “You should have done that the first morning.”

“I know.”

They reviewed the gala footage. The message had been inserted through the hotel’s presentation system using a Northline access code. Jake’s credentials had been used, but the log showed a second device connected remotely.

“Megan,” Olivia said.

“Maybe.”

“She knew about Claire.”

“And Jake’s father was on the tape.”

“Maybe they’re working together.”

Adrian’s phone rang. He answered, listened, and went pale.

“Who was it?”

“The police found a body in a burned vehicle near the old harbor.”

Olivia’s mouth went dry. “Who?”

“Daniel Parker.”

She could not breathe.

“That’s impossible,” she said. “He died years ago.”

“The identification was made from a license and dental records.”

“My father?”

“They believe so.”

Olivia pressed both hands to the desk. If Daniel had died recently, then the story she had been given was false. If the body was not Daniel, someone had spent years using his name.

Adrian reached for her. She stepped back.

“Don’t,” she said.

“Olivia.”

“Everyone keeps telling me a version of my life that protects them.”

“I’m not trying to protect myself.”

“You are the heir to the family that destroyed it.”

He absorbed the words as if they were a blow.

Naomi entered with a file. “The body wasn’t Daniel Parker.”

Olivia turned.

Naomi’s face was grim. “The dental records were altered. The man in the vehicle was a former Vale Meridian accountant named Samuel Ortiz.”

She placed a photograph on the table.

“He left one message before he died.”

The photograph showed a wall painted with a single sentence.

The ledger is not in the vault. It is in the girl’s house.
