Chapter 7 - The Tables Turn

Julian stopped dead in his tracks about twenty feet away, chest heaving, his eyes wide with horror as he recognized Elena standing beside me.
"You..." Julian pointed a shaking finger at Elena. "You're supposed to be in Geneva! You're supposed to be out of our hair!"
"And you were supposed to keep my sister quiet, locked away in your ancestral dungeon like a dirty little secret," Elena replied, her voice cutting through the morning silence like a razor blade. She stepped forward, holding up the legal documents. "Unfortunately for you, Julian, embezzlement, kidnapping, and identity fraud leave a very clear paper trail. And the authorities are already on their way."
Right on cue, the low, throbbing rumble of heavy diesel engines filled the air. From around the bend in the country road, three marked police cruisers and a state trooper van appeared, their blue and red emergency lights flashing brilliantly against the morning fog. They skidded to a halt outside the gates, blocking the driveway completely.
Officer Vance—no relation to the monsters inside—stepped out of the lead cruiser, resting his hand on his holster.
"Elena Vance? I'm Detective Miller. We received your financial audit and kidnapping corroboration files this morning," the detective announced, striding toward us. He glanced at Julian, who was now backing away slowly toward the house.
"That's him, Detective," Elena said, pointing a steady finger at my husband. "Julian Vance, along with his mother Martha Vance, engaged in systemic elder fraud, forged adoption records, and unlawful imprisonment of my twin sister, Clara Vance."
"Wait! This is a domestic dispute! She's my wife!" Julian yelled, panic finally cracking his facade wide open as two officers advanced on him with zip-ties and handcuffs.
"Your wife under false pretenses, sustained by kidnapping and fraud," Detective Miller retorted sharply. "Cuff him."
As Julian was wrestled to the ground and slapped with steel cuffs, the front door of the mansion swung open again. Martha stood on the porch, looking ancient, frail, and utterly defeated as she watched her son being led away in disgrace. She didn't scream. She didn't fight. She simply closed her eyes and let her arms fall limp at her sides as backup officers marched up the steps to place her under arrest.

I stood beside Elena, watching the empire they had built on lies and stolen lives crumble into dust.
Elena placed a warm, steady hand on my shoulder. "It's over, Clara. You're safe now. And we're going to take back everything they stole from us."
