Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Eviction

The cold night air inside my Lexus did little to numb the stinging throbbing across my cheekbones, but my hands were entirely steady on the steering wheel. I wiped the drying blood from my lower lip with a tissue, pulled down the visor mirror, and assessed the damage. Dark purple bruises were already blooming along my jawline, a physical testament to thirty-five years of blind devotion turned into ruthless betrayal.
I looked at the brass compass sitting in my lap. The glass casing was hairline-fractured, but the magnetic needle inside remained unbroken, faithfully pointing North. It reminded me of who I was before I became Victor’s safety net. I was Eleanor Hayes—the woman who had navigated through bankruptcy, union strikes, and widowhood without ever compromising her dignity.
I dialed my personal cell. It picked up on the second ring, despite it being two in the morning.
"Eleanor?" Marcus Vance’s voice was crisp, instantly alert. As my corporate attorney and closest confidant for over thirty years, Marcus knew every asset, every deed, and every contingency plan I had ever created. "Why are you calling at this hour? Did the birthday party go poorly?"
"Marcus," I said, my voice surprisingly firm despite the gravelly tone caused by the swelling in my throat. "Activate Protocol Alpha immediately. I want the locks changed on the Bel Air property by 7:00 AM. Draft an immediate notice to vacate, freeze all subsidiary executive credit cards issued under Hayes Global Holdings, and terminate Victor’s operational authority as acting Chief Executive Officer."
There was a heavy silence on the other end of the line. Marcus knew how deeply I loved my son. He knew I had spent years turning a blind eye to Victor's growing arrogance and Vanessa's subtle manipulations, hoping that fatherhood or age would ground him.
"Eleanor... what happened?" Marcus asked quietly.
"He laid his hands on me, Marcus," I replied, staring out at the distant lights of the mansion gleaming on the hillside. "In front of his guests. Because Vanessa asked him if he was going to let me disrespect him."
I heard the sharp intake of Marcus’s breath, followed by the sound of paper shuffling and rapid keyboard typing. The friendly, legal advisor vanished, replaced by the lethal corporate strategist who had helped me conquer the California real estate market.
"I am calling our security detail and the primary sheriff’s department now," Marcus said coldly. "The Bel Air residence is held entirely under Crestview Estate LLC, of which you are the sole 100% shareholder. Victor and Vanessa signed a temporary occupancy agreement three years ago, which included a strict moral turpitude and revoked-at-will clause. They don't own a single brick of that house. They don't even own the artwork on the walls."
"Execute it all," I said. "And Marcus? Have a process server standing by at the gates. I want a formal restraining order filed the moment the courts open."
"Consider it done, Eleanor. Where are you going now?"
"To the penthouse at the Wilshire," I answered. "I have a business to take back."
By 6:30 AM, three sleek black SUVs and a commercial locksmith van pulled up to the security gates of the Bel Air estate. The sun was just rising over the horizon, casting a golden hue over the Mediterranean-style villa. Inside, Victor and Vanessa were still asleep, blissfully unaware that the ground beneath their feet had already disintegrated.
The sound of heavy knocking boomed through the mahogany front doors. When the house manager opened it, he was met by four uniformed private security officers, two legal representatives from Vance & Associates, and a locksmith already bringing out his tools.
Victor emerged at the top of the grand marble staircase twenty minutes later, wearing an expensive silk robe, his face flushed with anger. Vanessa followed behind him in a satin negligee, clutching a coffee cup.
"What the hell is the meaning of this?!" Victor bellowed, his voice echoing off the high ceilings where my blood had been spilled hours prior. "Do you know who I am? I am Victor Hayes! This is my house! Get the hell out before I have you all arrested!"
Marcus stepped forward from behind the security officers, holding a thick leather folder. He looked at Victor not with anger, but with absolute contempt.
"Actually, Victor, you are mistaken," Marcus said calmly, opening the folder. "This property belongs exclusively to Crestview Estate LLC. I have here the deed, the corporate registration, and an immediate Notice to Vacate issued by the sole owner and Manager of Crestview LLC—your mother, Mrs. Eleanor Hayes."
Vanessa stepped forward, her face twisting into a sneer. "That old hag doesn't own this place! Victor paid for this mansion with his company earnings!"
"Correction, Mrs. Hayes," Marcus replied, turning his sharp gaze toward her. "Victor is an employee of Hayes Global Holdings. The capital used to acquire this mansion was deployed entirely from Eleanor’s personal trust five years ago. Furthermore, as of 5:00 AM today, the Board of Directors has suspended Victor Hayes from his role as acting CEO pending an investigation into physical assault, gross negligence, and breach of fiduciary duty."
Victor’s face drained of color. "What... what are you talking about? She gave me this company!"
"She allowed you to manage it under her supervision," Marcus corrected sharply. "She never transferred majority equity. You owned five percent of non-voting shares. And as of this morning, all corporate accounts, credit lines, and company-owned vehicles associated with your name have been frozen."
The locksmith’s drill whirred loudly as he began removing the deadbolt from the front door.

"You have thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing," Marcus stated, checking his watch. "Anything purchased with corporate funds—including the vehicles in the garage, the jewelry in the primary safe, and the fine art—remains property of the estate. If you are still on the premises at 7:15 AM, the Sheriff's Department will arrest you both for criminal trespass."
Vanessa dropped her coffee cup. It shattered on the marble floor—in the exact spot where my husband's brass compass had crashed hours before.
