Chapter 7 - Unshakeable Foundations

That evening, after picking Teddy up from daycare and stopping by my father’s house for a quick family dinner, I finally processed the strange phone call from the community center director.

My father was sitting at his kitchen island helping Teddy color inside the lines of a picture book when I brought it up.

“The St. Jude Center called my office today,” I said quietly, pouring myself a glass of sparkling water.

My father didn’t look up from the coloring book, though his hand paused over a blue crayon. “Daniel?”

“Word travels fast in your network.”

“Marcus Vance mentioned that someone matching his description had been spotted doing community service hours downtown as part of some misdemeanor diversion program,” my father said calmly. “Apparently, after losing his corporate certification, he tried to run a small private financial consultancy on the side without proper licensing. It didn't end well with the state regulatory board.”

“He listed me as his emergency contact,” I admitted, leaning against the counter.

Dad finally looked up, his sharp grey eyes softening with concern. “Are you alright, Claire?”

“I’m fine, Dad. Truly. That’s what surprised me the most. When I heard his name, I expected anger, or maybe a sick sense of satisfaction. But I felt nothing. It was like hearing about a stranger on the news.”

My father set down the blue crayon, walked over, and wrapped his arms around my shoulders, pressing a warm kiss into my hair. “That isn't coldness, sweetheart. That’s healing. You built a real life, anchored in love and truth. People who build castles out of ego always watch them turn to dust.”

Teddy toddled over, holding up a clumsy crayon drawing of a blue dog with three legs. “Mama! Look! Doggie!”

I scooped Teddy up into my arms, burying my face in his soft neck as he giggled uncontrollably. “That is the most magnificent doggie I have ever seen in my entire life, Teddy.”

As I looked past Teddy’s shoulder toward my father, who was smiling warmly at both of us, I knew the chapter involving Daniel Cross was permanently closed. There were no loose ends left to tie, no lingering resentments poisoning the air. We had crossed the finish line into a peaceful, unbreakable future.
