Chapter 9 - Renewal

The two weeks in Saint Lucia were nothing short of miraculous.
Far away from the painful memories of Virginia, Ethan and I truly rediscovered each other. We spent our days swimming in the warm turquoise waters, hiking through lush rainforests, and lying on the soft sand beneath stars that burned bright and clear in the tropical night sky.
Without the dark influence of his mother and the toxins in his system, Ethan transformed into the vibrant, passionately creative man he was always meant to be. He began sketching again—a passion he had abandoned years ago under his mother’s stifling reign. He filled sketchbooks with drawings of the ocean, the mountains, and mostly, of me.
On our final night on the island, Ethan reserved a private table on a secluded stretch of beach lit by flickering bamboo torches. The ocean waves lapped gently against the shore, creating a soothing melody.
Ethan held a glass of champagne, his eyes reflecting the warm torchlight.
"To new beginnings," he toasted softly.
"To new beginnings," I echoed, clinking my glass against his.
Ethan took my hand across the table, his gold wedding band gleaming in the light. "Claire... when I think about what you went through—stepping into that dark house, facing my mother, risking your own safety to dig for the truth—I realize how truly blessed I am. You didn't run away when things got terrifying. You saved my life."
"I loved you, Ethan," I said, leaning forward. "And love doesn't run when things get dark. It brings a light."
He smiled, a tear glinting in his eye. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it to reveal a brand new ring—a brilliant, ethically sourced emerald surrounded by small diamonds, glowing like a fresh spring leaf.
"I know I gave you a ring on our wedding day," Ethan said softly. "But that day was stained by shadows. I want you to have this as a symbol of our real beginning. A symbol of life, growth, and a future built on truth."
I wiped a tear from my eye as he slid the emerald ring onto my finger beside my gold wedding band. It fit perfectly.

"It's beautiful, Ethan," I whispered.
We walked along the water’s edge late into the night, hand in hand, the warm ocean breeze kissing our skin. For the first time since I had met Ethan, the air felt light, pure, and free. The nightmare was finally behind us.
