Chapter 15 - The Uncle in the Photograph

Mateo Vale had been dead in Mara’s mind for thirty-four years.
June had told the story so often that it had become family scripture: Mateo drowned in a quarry before Mara was born. Daniel had been the only person who knew where his body was found.
But there was no death certificate.
There was no grave.
There was only an old photograph in June’s bedroom showing two boys beside a red bicycle.
Mara had always assumed the taller one was Daniel.
Now she saw the truth. The boy with the crooked grin was Mateo.
Detectives found him in a rented house outside Salem using the name Victor Lane. He did not run. He sat on the porch and waited for them.
Mara faced him in an interview room.
“You tried to remove my daughter from a secured medical residence.”
“I tried to prevent her from being used as evidence.”
“You brought Nessa into the clinic.”
“Nessa acted alone.”
“You knew about the forged paperwork.”
“I knew BrightPath was exploiting June.”
“And you helped them?”
Mateo looked older than his years, with a scar near his left eyebrow and the same green eyes as Mara’s father.
“I helped June survive,” he said.
“By threatening me?”
“I never threatened you.”
“Someone sent me a picture of Leni asleep and told me to leave the blue box buried.”
“That was June.”
“Someone broke into the clinic.”
“Nessa.”
“Someone used June’s account to authorize a fake discharge.”
“Nessa.”
“You expect me to believe you were only a witness?”
Mateo leaned forward. “Your mother called me two months ago. She said BrightPath was going to expose her. She said Grant had threatened to report Cal. She asked me to help her get out.”
“Why did she trust you?”
“Because I was the only one who understood what Grant could do.”
“You were dead.”
“That was the point.”
Mateo explained that he had left Oregon after stealing money from his father’s business. He had spent years moving from state to state, hiding from creditors and family. Daniel eventually found him and demanded that he tell the truth to Mara.
“I refused,” Mateo said. “Daniel told me I was no better than June.”
“Were you?”
“For a long time.”
He admitted helping June access BrightPath’s system, but denied creating the forged medical authorization. He claimed he had only copied records to protect her from Grant.
Bell entered with a warrant and a photograph.
“This is from your rental house,” she said. “Why is there a printer matching the one used to create the fake forms?”
Mateo looked at Mara. “Because I printed the forms.”
Mara’s anger rose again.
“I did not forge your signature,” he said. “June did that.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You let it happen.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Mateo’s voice broke. “Because she told me if the truth came out, you would lose Leni to the state. She said you were too exhausted to fight.”
Mara leaned toward him. “You all used my fear as a weapon.”
Mateo lowered his head.
“Where is Nessa?” Bell asked.
“I don’t know.”
His phone rang.
The screen displayed an unknown number.
Bell answered on speaker.
Nessa’s voice whispered, “Grant has the child’s original records. He is going to burn them tonight.”
