Chapter 1 - The Cage in the Yard

My ten-year-old daughter Maya stopped answering my calls three days before I was supposed to pick her up. When I finally went to my ex-wife Elena’s house, I found my daughter locked inside a metal cage in the backyard—and she was terrified of something hidden in the swimming pool.
Since our divorce, I had tried not to turn every concern into another fight with Elena. She had remarried Julian, a man who was always polite around adults, but Maya became strangely quiet whenever his name came up. There had been warning signs. Maya sometimes begged to stay with me longer, and whenever I asked about Elena’s house, her shoulders tightened and her answers became shorter. By Sunday, I had heard nothing from her for three days, so I drove over. Julian’s SUV was in the driveway, the curtains were closed, and a chain blocked the front gate.
Nobody answered the door.
Then our longtime neighbor, Mrs. Harris, rushed outside and told me she had been hearing arguments from the house for weeks. Even more disturbing, Maya had stopped playing outside, and Julian had recently installed tall privacy panels around the backyard. Then Mrs. Harris told me what she had seen the previous night: “Julian carried several black trash bags into the backyard and threw them into the pool.”
Something inside me went cold. Mrs. Harris showed me a lower section of fence between the properties, and I climbed over. The backyard was overgrown, the patio looked abandoned, and the swimming pool had turned a murky green. Then I saw the blue tarp. Part of it had slipped away from a large metal dog cage in the corner of the yard. Inside, a small girl sat with her knees pulled against her chest.
Maya.
Her hair was tangled, her lips were dry, and she looked noticeably thinner than the last time I had seen her. But what frightened me most was how completely still she remained.
“Maya, sweetheart. It’s Dad.”
Her eyes slowly focused on me. “Daddy?”
I ran toward her and grabbed the cage door, but it was secured with a heavy padlock. After finding gardening pliers nearby, I finally broke it open and pulled her into my arms. Maya clung to my neck.

“I’ve got you. We’re leaving.”
I wanted answers, but getting her somewhere safe mattered more. Then, as I turned toward the gate, Maya suddenly froze in my arms...
