Chapter 10 - A New Spring

Spring returned to Montana with a vengeance, melting the winter snow into roaring mountain streams and turning the valleys into carpets of green grass and blooming wildflowers.
Leo took his very first steps on the front lawn, wobbling unsteadily on chubby legs before tumbling right into a patch of clover with a delighted giggle. Lydia clapped her hands, cheering him on, while Cassidy scooped him up into her arms, covering his face with kisses.
I stood on the porch, leaning against the sturdy cedar post I had carved myself, watching the afternoon sun wash over my family in a golden glow. The nightmare that had begun on a cold, silent night over a year ago felt like a lifetime away. Trent was locked away where he belonged, unable to ever harm anyone again. The fear that had once dictated every breath Cassidy took had been entirely replaced by confidence, strength, and joy.
Cassidy walked over, handing me a fresh cup of coffee, and stood beside me, watching Lydia and Leo chase each other through the grass.
“You know, Dad,” she said quietly, her voice full of peace. “I used to think that surviving was the hardest part. But I realize now that living—truly living—is the real victory.”
I put my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against my side.

“You didn't just survive, Cass,” I told her, looking out over the mountains that framed our lives. “You built an empire out of the ruins. And we’re never looking back.”
As the sun sank below the peaks, casting long, peaceful shadows across the yard, the house was filled with the sound of children laughing, music playing softly from the kitchen, and the steady, unbreakable heartbeat of a family made whole again.
