Chapter 5 - The Fallout Within the Clan

The legal battle didn't just shake our family tree; it completely uprooted it and set it on fire.
With the 4K doorbell footage and the audio recording broadcasted to the investigators, the District Attorney’s office refused to drop any charges against Vanessa. In fact, because my parents had officially given false statements to law enforcement on the record, they were both slapped with felony charges for obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact.
The golden illusion of our family was shattered into a million jagged pieces.
Word spread through Pine Valley Estates like wildfire. The community that had initially supported my mother’s hysterical Facebook post turned on them overnight once the unedited video leaked onto local news channels. Neighbors who used to wave cordially began walking their dogs on the opposite side of the street. The country club quietly suspended my father’s membership, citing "conduct unbecoming of a member," which, to my father, was a fate worse than physical injury.
On a rainy Thursday evening two weeks after the accident, someone pounded frantically on our front door.
David opened it cautiously, chain lock engaged. Standing on the porch, drenched to the bone and shivering uncontrollably, was my mother. The immaculate, proud woman who had always looked down her nose at everyone else was completely gone. Her hair was matted, her designer trench coat soaked through, and her eyes hollow.
"Nora," she sobbed, clutching the doorframe. "Please. You have to let me in. Just for a minute."
I stood in the hallway, watching her through the gap. "You're trespassing, Mom. And you're standing on the property of the 'unstable, hysterical daughter' you tried to ruin."
"They're talking about prison, Nora," she wept, sliding down against the doorframe into the puddle on our porch. "Your father's heart... the lawyers are demanding a fortune we don't have because we had to mortgage the house to bail Vanessa out, and Vanessa... Vanessa just sits in her room screaming that it's all my fault for spoiling her. Please. You're my daughter. Drop the charges. Save your family."
"My family is inside this house, Mom," I said softly, looking back toward the living room where David was reading a story to Mia, who was giggling safely on the couch. "You made your choice the second you stepped over your bleeding granddaughter to check if a Mercedes bumper had a scratch."
"I was just trying to protect your sister!" she screamed, the desperate grief momentarily morphing back into toxic entitlement. "Vanessa's life was ahead of her! She couldn't go to jail!"
"And what about Mia's life?" I asked, my voice cutting through the rain like glass. "Did she not matter? Did her blood on your concrete just inconvenience your view?"

My mother opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The harsh reality of what she had done finally seemed to pierce her armor. She slumped forward, weeping into her hands, entirely alone in the storm she and Vanessa had manufactured.
"Get off our property," I said, and closed the heavy oak door, locking the deadbolt with a final, heavy click.
