Part 8

As the courtroom emptied, Mary stood frozen in shock, staring at the defense table as if her world had just imploded. Eric let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief—ironically looking more relaxed now that a legal judgment had forced accountability upon his wife than he had in years.

My mother walked over slowly, leaning on her cane. Her face was pale, lined with exhaustion and stubborn pride. She looked at me not with anger, but with a hollow, defeated expression.

"Are you happy now, Amber?" Mom whispered, her voice cracking slightly. "You won. You humiliated your sister in front of a judge. Is your ego satisfied?"

I looked at my mother—the woman who had enabled my mistreatment for decades, who had always demanded I sacrifice my peace to keep Mary comfortable. A wave of profound pity washed over me, replacing the anger I had carried for so long.

"Mom, this was never about ego. This was about self-respect," I answered softly, keeping my voice gentle. "I didn't humiliate Mary. Her own entitlement did. I just stopped letting you both write the rules of my life."

Mom didn't answer. She turned around and slowly walked away to join Mary and Eric by the exit.

I walked out of the courthouse doors into the dazzling Los Angeles sunshine. The sky was an impossible shade of brilliant blue, and the warm breeze carried the scent of city flowers and ocean air. I took a deep, shuddering breath of absolute freedom.

I pulled out my phone and called Mrs. Gable to let her know I was on my way to pick up Andrew.

"How did it go, honey?" Mrs. Gable asked warmly over the line.

"We won, Mrs. Gable. Every single penny."

"Oh, thank God!" she cheered. "I'm so proud of you, Amber. Get over here, I baked fresh chocolate chip cookies for the celebration!"

When I picked up Andrew from her house, his face lit up like a beacon. I scooped him up in my arms, spinning him around while he giggled uncontrollably.

"Mom! What are we celebrating?" he asked, burying his face in my neck.

"We're celebrating justice, buddy," I whispered, kissing the top of his soft brown hair. "And the fact that Mom is taking you for double-scoop ice cream."
