Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at First Light

The sun began to bleed across the skyline, casting long, orange beams of light through the blinds of the hospital room. It was 6:00 AM. I hadn't slept a single minute. Every time Diego stirred, I smoothed his hair, whispered soothing words, and made sure he knew he wasn't alone.
The silence of the hallway was suddenly broken by the heavy sound of frantic footsteps echoing against the linoleum floor. I stood up instantly, positioning myself between the doorway and Diego's bed.
The door burst open, and Rick staggered into the room.
He looked like a ghost of the brother I knew. His eyes were bloodshot and rimmed with red, his hair was disheveled, and his expensive suit jacket was crumpled as if he had been sleeping in it on a plane. He stopped dead in his tracks when his eyes landed on the bed—on the tiny, pale boy hooked up to wires and monitors.
"Oh, God..." Rick choked out, covering his mouth with both hands. He sank to his knees right there near the doorway, his shoulders heaving as suppressed sobs wracked his body. "Diego... my baby boy..."
I walked over to him, my expression cold and unyielding. I grabbed him by the elbow and yanked him up, forcing him back out into the hallway to avoid waking the sleeping child.
"Don't perform for me, Rick," I hissed, closing the door quietly behind us. "Where were you when your wife was locking him in a dark room?"
"Pau, I swear to you on Mom's memory, I had no idea!" Rick gasped, gripping my shoulders desperately. "Carla told me she was taking the kids to her mother's cabin in Michigan for the weekend while I was at the legal tech summit in Chicago! She sent me photos of Renata on the beach! I asked about Diego, and she said he was napping in the cabin!"
"And you didn't ask to speak to him once in three days?" I demanded, shoving his hands off me. "You didn't ask why your five-year-old son wasn't on the phone saying goodnight to his dad?"
Rick flinched as if I had struck him. "She... she told me he was angry at me for working so much. She said he didn't want to talk to me. She’s been doing that for months, Pau! Spreading these subtle lies, making me feel like my own son was pushing me away!"
I stared at my brother, searching his eyes for any sign of deception. What I saw was a man who had been systematically manipulated, isolated, and blinded by a master sociopath. Carla had orchestrated a slow, calculated wedge between Rick and Diego, creating the perfect conditions to isolate the boy without raising suspicion.
"Where is she now?" I asked sternly.
"I don't know," Rick confessed, wiping his face with the back of his hand. "When I landed, I called her mother. Her mother hasn't seen Carla or the kids in three weeks. Carla lied to both of us. But when I tried to call Carla’s cell, she answered for five seconds. She screamed at me, said you were trying to destroy our family, and said she was coming back to get Diego before the police got involved."
"She sent me a threat an hour ago," I said, showing him the text message.
Rick read the words, and a look of absolute horror washed over his features, followed immediately by something I had rarely seen in him: real, unadulterated rage.
"She’s sick," Rick whispered, his fists clenching at his sides. "She’s completely out of her mind. I gave her everything, Pau. I gave her the house, the money, the lifestyle she wanted... and she left my son to die."
Before I could reply, two uniformed police officers stepped out of the elevator at the end of the hall, escorting a familiar, elegant figure clad in designer sunglasses, a linen sundress, and oversized hoop earrings.
Carla.
She walked down the hallway as if she owned the hospital, her heels clicking loudly against the floor. She had a woman with her—a sharp-looking lawyer carrying a leather briefcase.
"Rick!" Carla called out, putting on a performance of tearful desperation as she approached us. "Thank God you're here! Pau has completely lost her mind! She stole Diego from our home, she’s refusing to let me see him, and she’s spreading horrific lies to the authorities!"
I stepped directly in front of the hospital room door, my body rigid, blocking her path. "You take one step closer to that door, Carla, and I will tear you apart with my bare hands."
Carla stopped, pulling off her sunglasses to reveal eyes that were utterly cold and devoid of any genuine remorse. "Get out of my way, Pau. That is my son. You have no legal right to keep a mother from her child."
"Actually, Mrs. Vance, she does," Detective Miller’s voice boomed from down the corridor. He walked up alongside the two officers, holding a brightly colored piece of paper. "This is an Emergency Protective Order issued by Judge Henderson an hour ago. You are prohibited from coming within five hundred feet of Diego Vance or Pau Vance."
Carla’s lawyer stepped forward immediately. "Detective, my client is the legal primary guardian. These accusations of neglect are entirely unsubstantiated and based on the testimony of an estranged, hostile sister-in-law—"
"Save it for the arraignment, Counselor," Detective Miller cut in smoothly. "We have digital evidence of Mrs. Vance’s location at Paradise Bay Resort during the time the child was locked in the home, medical evidence of severe dehydration and physical trauma, and the text messages she sent to Miss Vance asking her to feed a dog that was currently at the resort with her."
Carla’s face went dead white. The polished, unshakeable facade she had maintained for years began to shatter in real-time. She turned to Rick, her hands reaching out to grab his arm. "Rick! Baby, listen to me! It was an accident! I thought the nanny was coming! The nanny canceled at the last minute and I thought—"
Rick pulled his arm away from her touch as if she were a venomous snake.
"Don't touch me," Rick said, his voice deadly quiet, laced with a disgust so profound it made Carla gasp. "You left our five-year-old boy in a locked room to rot while you took pictures by a pool. I want you out of my life, out of my house, and out of my children's lives forever."
"Rick, please!" Carla panicked, her voice rising into an unhinged screech as the officers stepped behind her and grabbed her arms. "You can't do this to me! I made you! You're nothing without me!"
"Carla Vance, you are under arrest for felony child endangerment, aggravated child abuse, and criminal neglect," Detective Miller announced, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping the handcuffs in place.
As the officers led the screaming, thrashing woman down the hallway toward the elevators, the hallway finally fell quiet again. Rick stood frozen, staring at the empty space where his wife had just been dragged away, tears streaming down his face.

I walked over to my brother, put my arm around his trembling shoulders, and guided him toward the door of his son's room.
"Come on," I said softly. "It’s time to be a father."
