Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominos

The courtroom was dead silent.
Gloria tried to speak, breaking her stoic composure. "Your Honor! Ian was a troubled boy! We had to keep him safe! We were protecting him from himself!"
"By locking him in closets?" Judge Montgomery asked, her gavel resting lightly in her hand. "By installing exterior slides on storage rooms and leaving a six-year-old child inside without food or water?"
"It was discipline!" Gloria blurted out, her composure completely shattering. The mask of the pious, suffering grandmother dissolved, revealing the controlling, unhinged tyrant underneath. "She was being disobedient! She was asking for her useless father! We were trying to break her bad habits before she turned out like him! You don't know what it takes to raise a family!"
Walt reached over to grab her arm, whispering desperately for her to be quiet, but it was too late. The entire court had heard her clear as day.
Judge Montgomery didn't even flinch. She signed the papers in front of her with a firm, decisive stroke of her pen.
"Based on the physical evidence, the corroborating historical documentation, and the defendant's own admissions in this court," Judge Montgomery announced, "I am immediately terminating all legal guardianship rights of Gloria and Walt. A permanent protective order is hereby issued, prohibiting both defendants from coming within 1,000 feet of minor Lizzy or her legal guardians."
She turned her gaze toward the back of the courtroom, where two police officers were waiting.
"Furthermore, in light of the physical evidence of criminal child abuse, unlawful confinement, and perjury, I am remanding Gloria and Walt into police custody pending formal state criminal charges."

The metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the courtroom. Gloria screamed, flailing against the officers as they seized her arms, while Walt bowed his head in silent, defeated shame.
I sat at our table, tears streaming down my face, as Adam wrapped his arms tightly around me. It was over. The shadow that had hung over our family for decades had finally been dragged into the light.
