Chapter 4 - The Breaking Point

Daniel let out a sharp, breathless laugh, though there was no humor in it. “Emily, what are you doing? Are you out of your mind? Don’t listen to her, Detective, she’s in shock, she’s delirious—”

“Mr. Harper, I asked you to be quiet,” Detective Vance said, holding up a hand. She turned back to me, pen poised over her notepad. “Go on, Mrs. Harper. What happened?”

My hands were shaking, but my voice remained steady as I recounted every detail. I told her about moving into Patricia’s house, the constant criticisms, the midnight confrontation, Patricia demanding I quiet the baby or leave, and finally, the physical strike across my face that caused me to stagger and drop Nora.

When I finished, the room was utterly silent.

Daniel stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back against the linoleum floor. “She’s lying! This is insane! She’s postpartum, she’s unstable, she’s making up stories because she resents my mother!”

“Mr. Harper, sit down,” Detective Vance said firmly, stepping toward the door where a hospital security guard had quietly appeared. “You’re welcome to stay, but if you interrupt or intimidate a witness during an active investigation, you will be escorted out.”

Daniel stared at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and absolute panic. “How could you do this? To my mother? To us?”

“You chose your mother over your daughter when you lied to the nurses,” I said, looking right through him. “And you chose her again just now.”

Detective Vance turned to Daniel. “Mr. Harper, did you witness the altercation?”

Daniel swallowed hard, his bravado crumbling. He looked at the security guard, then at the detective, and finally down at the floor. “I… I was downstairs. I didn’t see anything. I just heard crying.”

“And yet you felt comfortable telling the hospital staff that your wife dropped the baby due to dizziness?” Detective Vance asked, her pen scratching across the paper.

“My mother called me right after,” Daniel muttered, his voice barely audible. “She told me what happened. She said Emily dropped the baby in a scuffle. I… I just wanted to protect my family from a child services investigation.”

“By blaming your wife for child abuse?” Detective Vance’s expression was icy.

She turned back to me. “Mrs. Harper, we are going to secure a statement and issue a protective order regarding the residence. Given the circumstances, Child Protective Services will need to be involved, but please understand—you and your daughter are the victims here. We will ensure you are safe.”

Within the hour, Patricia’s phone calls began flooding Daniel’s phone. He sat in the corner of the ICU room, staring blindly at the screen as it lit up over and over again, ignoring every single call.

Detective Vance coordinated with the hospital social work department to arrange a secure, neutral transition once Nora was cleared for discharge. I wasn’t going back to Patricia’s house. And I wasn’t going back to Daniel, either.
