Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Tomorrow

Five years after the night that nearly destroyed my world, Lily’s fifth birthday approached.
She was preparing to start kindergarten in the fall. She was articulate, kind, incredibly smart, and possessed a fierce empathy for others.
We celebrated her birthday at our home. Daniel came over, bringing his new partner, a kind schoolteacher who adored Lily, and for the first time, our blended family dynamic felt entirely natural, peaceful, and harmonious. Daniel had become a wonderful, consistent father, having fully processed his past and rebuilt his life on a foundation of honesty and accountability.
Patricia had been released on parole a few months prior, moving out of state to live quietly in a small town in Florida, stripped of her wealth, her social standing, and her influence over our lives. She had tried to reach out via a letter once, but Daniel and I had jointly agreed to return it unopened. She was a ghost from a past that no longer had any power over us.
That evening, after the guests had left and the house was quiet, I went upstairs to tuck Lily into bed.
She was snuggled deep beneath her dinosaur-patterned duvet, her favorite stuffed bunny tucked tightly under her arm.
"Mommy?" Lily asked softly, her eyelids heavy with sleep.
"Yes, my sweet girl?" I said, sitting on the edge of her bed and brushing a stray curl away from her forehead.
"Am I safe?" she asked out of the blue—the innocent, random question of a child processing the world before sleep.
I leaned down, pressing a warm kiss against her temple, smelling the sweet scent of her baby shampoo.
"You are the safest girl in the whole wide world," I whispered with absolute certainty. "Mommy is always right here, and nothing will ever hurt you."
Lily smiled, a soft, content sigh escaping her lips as she closed her eyes and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

I stood in the doorway for a long moment, watching the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of her chest. The dark hallway that had once held terror and blood was now just a hall filled with warmth, nightlights, and love.
I stepped out, closing the door softly behind me, and walked into the bright, beautiful promise of tomorrow.
