Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The deposition took place in a sterile conference room on the thirty-fifth floor of Vance Sterling’s downtown office building. The room smelled of fresh coffee and expensive paper, but the atmosphere was thick with tension.

My mother-in-law sat at the opposite end of the mahogany table, flanked by two corporate defense lawyers who looked increasingly uncomfortable as they reviewed the exhibits stacked before them. My husband sat a few seats down, refusing to meet my eyes.

Vance stood at the head of the table, clicking through a digital projector presentation.

"Let's direct our attention to Exhibit G," Vance announced, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "Audio recording, timestamped five minutes prior to the emergency services call on November twelfth."

He pressed play.

The room filled with my mother-in-law's unmistakable, razor-sharp voice: “Make sure the paramedics focus on her emotional state. If she claims I was behind her, insist she slipped on her own accord. Julian has too much to lose for a scandal.”

One of the defense attorneys immediately leaned over, whispering frantically to my mother-in-law. Her face, usually locked in an expression of haughty superiority, turned a pale, sickly shade of grey. She opened her mouth to speak, but her lawyer cut her off, raising a hand.

"We need a fifteen-minute recess," the lead counsel announced, standing up abruptly.

"Take all the time you need," Vance replied smoothly. "Though I should inform you, the District Attorney's office has already received copies of these filings. A recess won't change the timeline."

As they scrambled out of the room to panic in private, my husband remained seated, staring blankly at the polished wood of the table. He looked smaller—stripped of the arrogant armor his family name had provided him his entire life.

I stood up, gathering my folder, and walked toward the door. As I passed his chair, Julian whispered without looking up.

"Can we ever... is there anything left?"

I paused, looking down at the man I had once believed was my forever.

"The only thing left, Julian, is the truth," I said softly. "And for the first time since I met you, it belongs entirely to me."
