Chapter 15 - The Meeting He Wanted

Ramirez wanted to evacuate my office.

Instead, detectives created a controlled plan.

My coworkers were sent home.

Police occupied nearby rooms.

Cameras covered every entrance.

At 8:26 a.m., a gray sedan entered the parking lot.

Leonard stepped out.

He was alone.

He wore a dark suit and carried a briefcase.

If I had not known what he was capable of, he might have looked like any businessman arriving for a meeting.

He walked inside.

I sat behind the conference table.

A detective monitored everything from the adjoining room.

Leonard smiled.

“Connor.”

“You’ve caused me a great deal of inconvenience.”

I stared at him.

“You tried to steal my house.”

“Your mother tried.”

“I simply financed her ambition.”

“You helped forge documents.”

“That would be difficult to prove.”

I let him talk.

He placed the briefcase on the table.

“I’m here because we can still solve this.”

He opened it.

Inside were documents.

“If you sign a settlement transferring a smaller portion of the house, I disappear.”

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to negotiate?”

“I expect you to protect your family.”

His tone changed.

“Trials are ugly.”

“Your wife’s recordings become public.”

“Your mother’s allegations become public.”

“Your father’s history becomes public.”

“You could spend years fighting.”

I leaned forward.

“And you think I’m afraid of embarrassment?”

Leonard smiled.

“Everyone is afraid of something.”

I thought about Amy washing dishes while holding our feverish son.

I thought about Frederick hidden upstairs while adults plotted around him.

I thought about my father losing twelve years with me.

Then I understood.

Leonard’s entire business depended on shame.

People surrendered because they were afraid neighbors would learn about debt.

Family conflict.

Addiction.

Mistakes.

He found vulnerability and turned it into property.

“I’m not ashamed.”

His smile faded slightly.

“My family made mistakes.”

“I made mistakes.”

“But none of that gives you my house.”

Leonard closed the briefcase.

Then he said quietly,

“You should reconsider.”

“Why?”

“Because Teresa told me something you still don’t know.”

I remained silent.

“Your wife has money.”

Amy?

That made no sense.

“She doesn’t.”

Leonard smiled.

“She does.”

“Ask her about the trust.”

I knew immediately he was trying to destabilize me.

Still, the word bothered me.

“What trust?”

He stood.

“That’s the interesting question.”

Police entered before he reached the door.

Leonard froze.

Ramirez placed him under arrest.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

But as officers led him away, he turned toward me.

“Connor.”

“Ask Amy why your mother really chose her.”

That evening, I told Amy exactly what he said.

She stared at me for several seconds.

Then she walked upstairs.

When she returned, she was carrying an envelope.

“I was going to tell you.”

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?”

May you like

Amy placed the envelope in my hands.

“My grandmother left me nearly two million dollars.”
