Chapter 3 - The Godfather’s Rage and the Empty Nest

The private jet touched down at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut in record time. Damian Moreland stepped off the airstrip into a waiting fleet of black sedans, his face a mask of terrifying composure. For fifteen years, Damian had commanded respect through cold, calculated power. In the underground boardrooms of New York and the shipping lanes of the Eastern seaboard, his word was absolute law. Men who crossed him disappeared; corporations that resisted him were bought and dismantled. Yet as he stepped through the grand doors of his own mansion, a chill unlike any he had ever experienced gripped his heart.

The estate was flooded with thirty of his most trusted operatives. Laptops were setup on the grand dining table, security footages were being analyzed, and forensic cyber-analysts were tracing phone pings. Marcus, the security chief, stood in the foyer, his face pale and sweat glistening on his forehead.

“Report,” Damian barked, his voice low and vibrating with dangerous energy.

“Sir, the security cameras along the perimeter were looped between 11:45 PM and 1:15 AM,” Marcus reported, stepping back respectfully. “Whoever executed this had exact access codes and knew the dead zones of our infrared grid. It wasn't an abduction, Mr. Moreland. There was no struggle. No forced entry. She walked out.”

Damian walked slowly toward the marble kitchen island. There, lying beneath the soft recessed lighting, was her diamond engagement ring, her platinum wedding band, and the white folder. Next to them sat the original manila envelope containing the photographs of him and Sabrina Cole.

Damian picked up the folder with steady fingers, but inside, his chest was violently contracting. He opened it. The legal document was impeccably drafted. It surrendered every claim to his vast wealth—his multi-million dollar estates, his stock holdings, his offshore accounts. She was asking for nothing. No alimony. No settlement. Only full, sole legal and physical custody of their unborn child, alongside a signed statement declaring that she wished never to be contacted again.

“Where is she?” Damian’s voice dropped to a whisper that made every man in the room freeze.

“We checked all local hospitals, private clinics, and emergency rooms within a two-hundred-mile radius, sir,” Marcus stammered. “No record of Claire Moreland or Jenna Vance being admitted under their legal names or social security numbers.”

“She was six centimeters dilated when she called me!” Damian roared, slamming his fist onto the marble counter with such force that the stone cracked beneath his weight. “She was in labor! She couldn't have driven across state lines without medical assistance! Find her! Search every private airstrip, every unlisted doctor, every offshore yacht club! If you have to tear down every hospital in New England brick by brick, bring my wife and son back to me!”

Sabrina Cole arrived at the estate two hours later via private car, stepping into the chaotic hub of operations. She walked up to Damian, who was staring fixedly at the photographs left on the island.

“Damian, darling,” Sabrina said softly, putting a hand on his arm. “You need to calm down. She’s throwing a dramatic tantrum because she found those pictures. She’ll come crawling back once she realizes she can’t survive without your money and protection. A woman like her—a former librarian—can’t raise a child alone in the real world.”

Damian turned his head slowly. His eyes were bloodshot, filled with a lethal darkness that made Sabrina instantly draw her hand back in terror.

“Get out,” Damian said.

“What?” Sabrina blinked, shocked. “Damian, I came here to support you! My father’s deal—”

“I don’t give a damn about your father’s deal, your father’s ports, or your father’s empire!” Damian snarled, stepping into her personal space like a predatory shadow. “You deliberate leaked those photographs to her, didn’t you? You wanted her to find them so she would leave.”

Sabrina’s composure cracked. “She didn’t fit your world, Damian! She was weak! She was a quiet, plain woman who spent her days reading books while you built a global syndicate! I can be the partner you actually need!”

“She was the only person in this world who loved me for who I was, not for what I owned,” Damian said, his voice deadly calm. “And you helped destroy that. If I find out you had any hand in endangering her or my child during her labor, your father’s business will be bankrupt by nightfall, and you will never set foot in this city again. Get out of my sight.”

Sabrina fled the estate in tears. Damian stood alone in the center of his massive, empty palace. He walked up the stairs into the newly completed nursery. The walls were painted a soft sky blue. A wooden crib, hand-carved in Italy, sat empty in the center of the room. On a small side table sat a pair of tiny knitted yellow booties that Claire had made herself.

Damian picked up the tiny booties, holding them against his palm. For the first time in his ruthless, unyielding life, Damian Moreland sank onto his knees on the nursery rug, pressing the baby shoes to his face, and let out a broken, soundless sob.
