Chapter 12 - The Deal Mariana Refused to Make.
Daniel expected Mariana to bargain.
He expected anger, urgency, or fear to push her toward the confidentiality agreement.
Instead, Mariana looked at Sofia.
“Call the investigators.”
Daniel shot out of his chair.
“Wait.”
Sofia was already reaching for the phone.
“You came here with information about a person being sought in an active fraud investigation,” she said.
“You do not get to sell that information to the victim.”
Daniel's attorney stood too.
“My client was attempting to resolve a civil matter.”
“This is no longer only a civil matter.”
Daniel looked directly at the camera.
“Mariana, if Mateo disappears, you may never recover anything.”
Mariana's expression did not change.
“I already recovered the most important thing.”
Daniel knew she meant Camila.
His face twisted.
“You always have to make everything sound noble.”
“No.”
Mariana's voice was almost gentle.
“I finally stopped making everything sound complicated.”
Investigators arrived at Sofia's office forty minutes later.
Daniel's attorney negotiated how the information would be provided.
Daniel said Mateo planned to meet Carmen that night at a storage facility on the northern edge of the city.
Carmen was supposed to bring cash and a hard drive.
“What hard drive?” an investigator asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“One from Mariana's office.”
Mariana felt the familiar chill of another betrayal.
“What was on it?”
“Backups.”
“Of my company?”
“Some.”
“You stole it?”
“I took it.”
“That is the same sentence with fewer consequences.”
Daniel looked away.
He said Carmen had hidden the drive after the balcony incident.
Mateo wanted it because it contained archived client and financial files that might help him rebuild the receivables scheme elsewhere.
Daniel claimed he had refused to deliver it.
Carmen had agreed instead.
Authorities did not tell Mariana how they intended to handle the meeting.
Sofia made sure Mariana was nowhere near the location.
That night, Mariana stayed with Camila and Teresa.
They baked banana muffins.
Camila insisted on stirring the batter herself.
Flour covered her cheeks.
For forty minutes, Mariana's world became small enough to survive.
Then Sofia called.
“Mateo is in custody.”
Mariana sat down.
“Carmen?”
“Also being questioned.”
“Was anyone hurt?”
“No.”
Mariana closed her eyes.
The hard drive was recovered.
So was an envelope containing 180,000 pesos in cash.
Carmen initially claimed she had gone to the storage facility to retrieve family property.
Then investigators showed her Daniel's statement.
She accused Daniel of lying.
When they showed her text messages with Mateo, she accused Mateo of manipulating her.
When they showed her the hard drive from Mariana's office, she said Daniel had placed it in her bag.
Her explanations changed faster than investigators could write them down.
Mateo chose a different strategy.
He asked for a lawyer.
Then he offered cooperation.
Over the next two days, the structure of Norte Vista became clearer.
Mateo had been the architect of several financial maneuvers.
Julio had provided stolen company data.
Carmen had moved money through the foundation and helped obtain signatures and identity documents.
Daniel had approved transactions, recruited Mariana's assets into the plan, and supplied access to her home records.
Valeria had received money and promoted the lifestyle, but investigators found less evidence that she understood the full financial scheme.
That did not make her innocent of every act.
It made her useful as a witness.
When Valeria realized Mateo had emptied their shared account and planned to leave the country without her, loyalty evaporated.
She handed investigators two old phones and a laptop.
One phone contained a group chat named NV CORE.
Participants included Mateo, Daniel, Carmen, and Valeria.
Mariana was not in it.
Neither was Ricardo.
The early messages were about the hotel project.
Then they became personal.
Mateo complained that Mariana would never approve the risk.
Daniel replied, She doesn't need to know until we have leverage.
Carmen wrote, Once it is profitable she will thank you.
Valeria added laughing emojis.
Months later, after the Orion loan began failing, the tone changed.
Mateo wrote, We need the receivables.
Daniel replied, Too far.
Mateo responded, You already crossed the line at the guarantee.
Carmen wrote, Do what protects the family.
Then came the message that finally explained the life insurance change.
Mateo had written, Foundation needs assets on paper or lender won't respect it.
Carmen replied, I can move the policy beneficiary temporarily.
Daniel responded seven minutes later.
Do not do anything that could look criminal.
Carmen answered.
Everything looks criminal when poor people explain it badly.
Daniel sent no further message in that thread.
Mariana stared at the screen when Sofia showed her.
“Does that mean he didn't know?”
“It means we cannot tell from that thread whether he approved the policy change.”
Mariana nodded.
She did not want revenge strong enough to make her careless with truth.
If Carmen changed the policy without Daniel's knowledge, then that fact mattered.
If Daniel knew, evidence would have to prove it.
The same principle applied to every accusation.
Facts first.
Anger later.
Mateo also produced the original Orion guarantee.
It had been inside his storage locker.
The signature was a traced reproduction.
A forensic document examiner identified pressure marks consistent with someone practicing Mariana's signature on sheets placed above the final page.
The half-burned practice sheet from Carmen's balcony shared several distinctive stroke errors.
That link was not absolute proof by itself.
Together with messages and account records, it became powerful.
The family court received the independent evaluator's report one week later.
Mariana sat with Sofia and read every page.
Dr. Ibarra found Camila strongly attached to Mariana.
He found no evidence that Mariana coached her allegations.
He found her work travel significant but historically accompanied by a reasonable reliance on family childcare.
He criticized Mariana for insufficient oversight of that care.
She accepted the criticism.
He found Daniel affectionate toward Camila but unable to separate his relationship with his mother from his parenting decisions.
He found Daniel repeatedly minimized harmful conduct and attempted to influence Camila's account during supervised visitation.
He found Carmen's behavior concerning and recommended she have no unsupervised contact with Camila.
The conclusion recommended that Mariana retain primary residential custody while Daniel's contact remain supervised until he completed parenting intervention and individual therapy.
Mariana read the conclusion twice.
Then she cried.
Not because she had won.
Nothing about the report felt like winning.
She cried because a neutral professional had looked at the chaos and seen Camila clearly.
That evening, Daniel sent a message through the court-approved parenting application.
I read the report.
Mariana did not answer immediately.
A second message arrived.
I know you think I deserve this.
Then a third.
Maybe I do.
Mariana stared at the words.
For the first time, Daniel had written something that did not contain an excuse.
Then the fourth message appeared.
But if my mother goes down, she's taking me with her.
Mariana's brief hope disappeared.
The next morning, prosecutors filed formal fraud-related charges against Mateo and announced additional investigative actions involving forged documents and unauthorized financial activity.
Carmen was summoned again.
Daniel was summoned too.
Valeria received immunity on limited matters in exchange for truthful cooperation, subject to conditions her attorney negotiated.
Ricardo moved out of the apartment.
He refused to live with Carmen while the investigation continued.
Carmen called Mariana from a new number that night.
Mariana answered only because Sofia was beside her and recording.
Carmen did not yell.
That made the call more disturbing.
“You think Daniel invented all of this because he is weak,” Carmen said.
Mariana remained silent.
“He is weak.”
Carmen's voice was calm.
“But weak men do not build plans.”
“What do you want?” Mariana asked.
“I want you to understand that your marriage was broken before the money.”
“You called to give me relationship advice?”
“No.”
Carmen paused.
“I called because there is one recording you have not heard.”
Mariana looked at Sofia.
“What recording?”
“The night Daniel decided he wanted custody.”
“When?”
“Almost a year ago.”
Carmen lowered her voice.
“And if you hear what he said about Camila, you will never allow him near her again.”
Valeria's cooperation produced one personal discovery that never entered the financial case.
Months earlier, Carmen had sent Valeria a message complaining that Camila cried too easily after video calls with Mariana.
Valeria had replied, Then stop letting her call.
Carmen answered, Already did.
When Valeria saw the message again during evidence review, she began crying.
“I thought Mom meant before bedtime,” she told her attorney.
Maybe she did.
Maybe she did not.
Mariana no longer spent energy deciding which version made Valeria feel less guilty.
