Chapter 5 - A Husband’s Last Lie

Dominic’s counterattack began on a Monday morning with a headline timed for maximum damage.STONE CEO CLAIMS WIFE ENGINEERED TAKEOVER AFTER YEARS OF MANIPULATION.The article described Eliza as controlling, secretive, and emotionally absent. Dominic alleged that she had concealed her family’s ownership of Stone Capital, manipulated him into serving as a figurehead, and used the kiss at the gala as an excuse to steal his life’s work.By noon, his attorneys had filed for emergency relief in federal court.By one, every television in the city was showing a clip of Dominic speaking outside the courthouse.“I made mistakes in my marriage,” he said, his expression carefully broken. “But I did not consent to being used as a corporate instrument for twelve years.”Eliza watched the clip in Arthur’s office.“He consented to every salary increase,” she said.Arthur closed the laptop. “The court will not care about his hypocrisy. It will care about documentation.”“Then we give them documentation.”The hearing room was packed. Reporters filled the benches behind the attorneys. Dominic sat at the opposing table, surrounded by counsel and wearing the wedding ring Eliza had given him on their fifth anniversary. His lawyer rose first. “My client built Stone Capital’s value through personal labor, public credibility, and strategic innovation. The defendant has concealed a family trust to retroactively claim ownership of assets she did not create.”Arthur stood. “The defendant did not conceal ownership. She protected it from a man who mistook visibility for title.”The judge called for order.Dominic’s attorney introduced the prenuptial agreement. Under the arrangement, Dominic would receive a substantial portion of any assets he could demonstrate had been generated through his independent business activities.“He is entitled to a fair share,” Arthur said.“You are not contesting the agreement?” the judge asked.“We are contesting the interpretation. Mr. Stone’s operating authority was conditional. His compensation and acquisitions were financed through Ether Holdings, which he did not disclose in his personal filings.”Dominic looked at Eliza.“You knew,” he mouthed. She kept her face still.Arthur called Claire Bennett to the stand.Claire had regained temporary access to Ether after Thomas proved her credentials had been cloned. She looked exhausted, but her testimony was precise.“The transfers to Harbor Meridian were authorized through Dominic’s executive office,” she said. “However, the routing instructions were generated using an inherited administrator profile.”“Whose profile?” Arthur asked.“Margaret Voss.”Dominic’s attorney objected. The judge overruled him. Then Dominic was called. He sat beneath the witness light, suddenly looking less like a billionaire and more like the frightened young man Eliza had once met in Sterling’s library.“Did you know Ether Holdings controlled Stone Capital?” Arthur asked.“I knew there were investment structures.”“Did you know Eliza controlled Ether Holdings?”“Not in the way she claims.”“There is a difference between knowing and understanding.”“She never told me.”“Did you ask?”Dominic’s mouth tightened. “She made it clear I was expected to perform.”Eliza felt the accusation land somewhere old. “Perform” had been his word whenever he wanted to turn his own ambition into her cruelty.Arthur placed a document before him. “This is a transfer authorization signed by you, directing twelve million dollars to an account that ultimately benefited Harbor Meridian. Why?”Dominic stared at the page.“I was instructed to sign it.”The courtroom went silent.“By whom?”“Margaret.”“Margaret Voss?”Dominic looked at Eliza. His eyes had lost their practiced confidence.“She had proof I had taken money from the foundation.”Eliza turned sharply.Arthur’s voice remained calm. “How much?”“Not for personal use.”“How much?”Dominic swallowed. “Three million.”He explained that he had moved the money into an account to cover losses from a failed acquisition. Margaret had discovered it and threatened to expose him unless he followed her instructions. The affair with Sierra had begun as a genuine attraction, but Margaret had encouraged it, photographed private meetings, and used the evidence to keep him obedient.“You were blackmailed,” Arthur said.“Yes.”“You still chose to continue the scheme.”Dominic looked toward Eliza. “I thought I could fix it.”“You thought you could save yourself,” Eliza said. His face crumpled for half a second.“Yes,” he admitted. The judge denied Dominic’s request to control Ether’s assets but ordered a full accounting of the marriage and corporate funds. The legal victory felt less like triumph than a door that had opened onto a longer corridor.Outside the courthouse, Dominic caught Eliza before she reached the car.“I’m sorry,” he said. She stopped.“For which part?”His gaze dropped. “For the gala. For lying. For letting you believe I loved the empire more than I loved you.”“You did not let me believe that. You showed me.”“I was afraid.”“So was I.”“You never looked afraid.”“That was the point.”He stepped closer. “Margaret has something worse than the money.”Eliza’s expression hardened. “What?”“She has the original succession letter. The one your father wrote before he died.”“Why does that matter?”“Because it says he intended to remove you from Ether if you refused the marriage arrangement.”Eliza felt the pavement tilt beneath her.Dominic reached for her arm, then stopped himself. “I didn’t know about that until last year.”“And you said nothing.”“Margaret threatened to send it to the press.”Arthur came through the courthouse doors. “Eliza.”Dominic lowered his voice. “She will not stop. If you keep digging, she will go after the people around you.”That night, Eliza found a photograph beneath the windshield wiper of her car.It showed Julian leaving Ether’s office. On the back, written in black ink, were seven words.NEXT TIME, THE CAR WILL NOT BE EMPTY.
