Chapter 10 - Dawn of a New Life

Three months later, the autumn leaves had turned vibrant shades of gold and amber, painting our new neighborhood with a warmth that felt entirely earned.
The federal trial was swift. With Derek’s offshore accounts frozen, his corporate accomplices turning state's evidence to save themselves, and the crystal-clear audio recording I had captured on my phone playing in the courtroom, Derek was sentenced to forty-five years without the possibility of parole. The million-dollar insurance policy he had fraudulently taken out was legally nullified and redirected into a secure trust fund for Lily's future education.
We sat on the front porch of our new home—a small, sunlit cottage three towns over, with a big backyard, a wooden swing hanging from a sturdy maple tree, and no secrets hidden in the walls.
Lily sat on the top step, carefully painting a picture of a rabbit with a bright blue crayon, humming a cheerful little tune to herself.
My phone buzzed on the small wooden table beside my iced tea. I picked it up, expecting a message from Evelyn or Marcus, who still checked in on us every Sunday.
Instead, it was a notification from the local bank: Account balance updated. Secure deposit received.
I smiled, locked the screen, and set the phone down face-down on the table.
"Mommy?" Lily called out, looking up from her drawing with a bright, untroubled smile. "Are we going to make pancakes for dinner tonight?"

"Only if we make them extra fluffy, sweetie," I replied, standing up to walk over and wrap my arms around her.
The past was behind us, locked away where it belonged. For the first time in years, the future belonged entirely to us.
