Chapter 16 - THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS

Claire did not answer the message.

Every part of her wanted to.

The photograph of the cabin sat on her screen like a dare.

You want the full video?

Come alone.

Lucas's call was recorded with police approval once Ruiz joined the line through a secure conference connection.

Claire knew that before she asked Lucas another question.

She also knew she could not promise him anything.

That boundary steadied her.

For months, Daniel had benefited from conversations in which other people negotiated around Claire rather than with her.

Now she spoke plainly.

"I will not help you avoid consequences."

Lucas exhaled.

"I figured."

"But if you have evidence that protects Emma, give it to the people who can preserve it."

There was a long pause.

"Daniel said you were emotional."

Claire almost smiled.

"I am."

"That doesn't make me wrong."

Nora took the phone from her hand.

"You are not going anywhere alone."

"I know."

"Say it like you mean it."

Claire looked at her.

"I am not going anywhere alone."

They sent the message to Ruiz.

Within twenty minutes, officers were on the road toward Lake Mercer.

Ruiz instructed Claire not to respond until the digital unit could trace the account.

The sender used a service designed to hide location.

That did not make the account invisible.

It made the process slower.

A third message arrived.

Daniel is not the only one who lied to you.

Claire's pulse jumped.

Nora read it over her shoulder.

"That sounds like Lucas."

"Or Daniel pretending to be Lucas."

"Daniel is wearing a monitor."

"He can still type."

Nora nodded.

Ruiz authorized a controlled reply.

Where?

The answer came in seconds.

Cabin.

Midnight.

Alone.

Claire typed nothing else.

Police reached the cabin at 10:42 p.m.

No one was there.

The road camera they had installed after the search showed no recent vehicle entry.

The new photograph had not been taken that evening.

Metadata suggested it was at least two weeks old.

The timestamp had been added later.

Whoever sent the message wanted Claire to believe someone was waiting at the cabin.

Ruiz called her.

"It's a trap."

Claire stood by Megan's kitchen window.

"A trap for what?"

"Maybe to get you out of the house."

Megan turned from the counter.

"Out of my house?"

Ruiz's voice sharpened.

"Lock every door."

A patrol car was already stationed half a block away because of the ongoing case.

Claire checked the back door.

Megan checked the garage.

Nora called Sarah to confirm Emma was secure.

Then the power went out.

The house dropped into darkness.

Megan gasped.

Claire's phone flashlight came on.

"Ruiz."

"Stay inside."

The alarm panel switched to battery backup.

A second later, the back motion light flashed once and died.

Someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Claire's body remembered the whisper in the living room.

Her hands began to shake.

Nora saw it.

"Look at me."

Claire did.

"This is not Saturday."

Claire nodded.

"You know where you are."

"Megan's house."

"You know who you're with."

"You and Megan."

The knock came again.

Claire breathed.

A police officer's voice sounded from outside.

"Mrs. Morgan, police."

Ruiz confirmed through the phone that the officer was legitimate.

They opened the door.

The neighborhood transformer had failed.

No sabotage.

No intruder.

The timing was coincidence.

Claire laughed until she cried.

Trauma had made coincidence feel like strategy.

That realization embarrassed her until Nora stopped her.

"Fear doesn't make you foolish."

Claire wiped her eyes.

"Daniel would love to hear me say every shadow is him."

"Then don't give him shadows."

"Give him facts."

At 12:07 a.m., the anonymous account sent one more message.

Wrong house.

Claire's laughter stopped.

Ruiz immediately called Sarah.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Officers were dispatched.

Claire's heart hammered as she stood in Megan's dark kitchen.

Then Sarah finally called back.

"We're fine."

Claire nearly dropped the phone.

Sarah had been in the shower.

Emma was asleep.

The house was secure.

The message was psychological pressure.

Ruiz traced part of the anonymous account's traffic to a public Wi-Fi network at a twenty-four-hour laundromat.

Security footage showed a man in a baseball cap using a laptop at 9:30 p.m.

The image was grainy.

The man was not Daniel.

It might have been Lucas.

The next morning, police identified the rideshare driver who had picked Lucas up from the airport.

Lucas had been dropped at a bus station forty miles away.

A ticket purchase under a false name led to a motel near Lake Mercer.

Officers arrived after checkout.

Inside the trash, they found packaging for an external storage drive.

The drive itself was gone.

Lucas was still moving.

Then Claire received a call from him.

Not encrypted.

Not hidden.

His real voice.

"Don't hang up."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because Daniel is going to blame everything on me."

"Did you help him?"

Lucas laughed bitterly.

"With money, yes."

"With my daughter?"

"No."

"Then why do you have the video?"

Silence.

Claire gripped the phone.

"Lucas."

"Daniel sent it to me."

"When?"

"Saturday morning."

"Before police came?"

"Yes."

Claire's skin went cold.

"Why?"

Lucas's answer was simple.

"Insurance."

Daniel had sent Lucas the video because Lucas was holding part of the foreign money.

If Daniel's custody plan worked, Lucas would release funds and help arrange the move abroad.

If Daniel betrayed him, Lucas would keep evidence connecting Daniel to the staged incident.

They had not trusted each other.

That mutual distrust might now save Claire.

"Give it to police."

"I want a deal."

"I'm not a prosecutor."

"You can tell them I called."

"They already know you're involved."

Lucas swore.

"Daniel said you'd be declared incompetent."

Claire closed her eyes.

"He said Emma would be with him before anyone understood what happened."

"And you believed that was okay?"

"I believed no one was getting hurt."

Claire's voice turned cold.

"Every person in this story believed that right up until my daughter screamed."

Lucas went quiet.

Then he said something that made Claire sit down.

"The video doesn't start where police think it starts."

"What does that mean?"

"Daniel recorded before the bat was in your hands."

Claire's breath caught.

"How long before?"

"Long enough."

"For what?"

"For you to see who was making the voice."

Claire's entire body went still.

"Who?"

Lucas whispered.

"Daniel."

The call ended.

Thirty minutes later, Ruiz received a location from Lucas's attorney.

Lucas surrendered at a state police office two counties away.

He handed over an encrypted drive.

The drive contained the full video.

Ruiz watched it once without speaking.

Then he watched it again.

His partner turned away halfway through.

The footage began at 10:36 a.m.

Claire stood near the stairs, disoriented but calm.

Emma sat on the floor with her ball.

Outside the glass door, Daniel was visible in reflection.

He held his phone in one hand.

In the other, he held a small remote.

A blue light on the bookshelf switched on.

A whisper filled the room.

Claire looked toward it.

Daniel watched through the glass.

Then he pressed the remote again.

The whisper returned.

May you like

And the man behind the glass did not move to save anyone.

He moved closer to get a better angle.
