Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

Five years later, Lily turned ten.
We didn't throw a massive, pretentious party with distant relatives and forced smiles. Instead, we rented a cozy cabin by a crystal-clear lake surrounded by tall pine trees. Just close friends, Mark’s family, and us.
There were no balloons behind glass doors, no cold porches, and no bitter matriarch lurking in the shadows.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and violet, Lily ran up the wooden dock with a fishing pole in her hand, laughing as Daniel jogged behind her to make sure she didn't slip.
I sat on the porch of the cabin, wrapped in a comfortable cardigan, watching my husband and daughter skip stones across the glassy water. The wind rustled through the pines, carrying the sweet scent of pine and campfire smoke.
Daniel looked back toward the porch, caught my eye, and flashed a brilliant, loving smile that still made my heart skip a beat after all these years. He raised his hand, gesturing for me to join them.

I stood up, stepped off the porch, and walked down toward the water, my boots crunching softly on the pine needles. There was no weight on my shoulders, no fear in my heart, and no shadow over our home.
We had survived the storm, broken the chains of the past, and built something real, enduring, and filled with unconditional love. We had finally found our happily ever after.
