Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Aethelgard

The truth came out in cold, brutal pieces over the next forty-eight hours.

Detective Chen sat across from me in an interrogation observation room at the precinct, pushing a warm cup of coffee into my trembling hands. On the other side of the one-way glass, Mark sat at a metal table, looking disheveled, his pristine image entirely shattered. Yet, he didn't look remorseful. He looked annoyed, like a scientist whose grant had been prematurely cut off by incompetent bureaucrats.

“Mark wasn't working on agricultural enzymes,” Detective Chen explained, clicking open a manila folder filled with corporate documents. “Three years ago, he was quietly terminated from Aethelgard Pharmaceuticals for conducting unauthorized, off-record testing on animal tissue. He was obsessed with developing a synthetic peptide compound—he named it 'Aethel-8'—designed to forcibly suppress human fatigue, accelerate cell regeneration, and heighten cognitive memory retention.”

I stared at her, struggling to process the madness. “He... he was using our daughter as a test subject?”

“He was using both of you,” Detective Chen corrected gently.

My head snapped up. “What?”

“The powdery residue you found on the towel? That was the binder he used to synthesize the peptide,” she explained. “According to his notes, he began testing low doses on himself first, but adults have built-up tolerances that skewed his data. He needed an uncompromised, developing biological system to measure maximum cellular absorption.”

She turned a page in the file, showing me a copy of the red notebook’s contents.

“He started small. Mixing microscopic amounts into your morning coffee to test mild cognitive drift—that explains the bouts of unexplained dizziness and chronic migraines you reported to your doctor last year.”

A chill swept through my entire body. The random fainting spells I had suffered six months ago... the sudden memory lapses I had blamed on stress and exhaustion... it hadn't been stress. My own husband had been slipping experimental chemicals into my food.

“When he realized the compound required controlled body temperature elevation for optimal absorption,” Detective Chen continued, “he shifted his primary focus to Sophie. Warm baths elevated her heart rate and opened her pores, allowing him to administer the solution orally while monitoring her physical parameters in real-time. He timed her endurance, measured her body heat, and recorded how long her small body could sustain the compound before showing signs of organ distress.”

“He’s a monster,” I whispered, tears of rage burning my eyes. “He treated our baby girl like a lab rat.”

“He is a sociopath,” Detective Chen agreed flatly. “And he believed he was on the verge of a breakthrough that would make him millions on the black-market pharmaceutical network. We found correspondence on an encrypted server in your basement linking him to a private offshore medical broker based in Switzerland. He was preparing to sell the trial data for over four million dollars.”

Through the glass, I watched Mark lean back in his chair, calmly explaining something to his court-appointed attorney, gesturing with his hands as if he were presenting a PowerPoint slideshow at a corporate seminar. There was no sadness in his face. No sorrow for the terror he had inflicted on his daughter, no remorse for poisoning his wife.

He only cared about his data.

“Will he get out on bail?” I asked, my voice shaking with sudden fear.

“Not a chance,” Detective Chen said firmly. “We’ve charged him with aggravated child abuse, unlawful administration of dangerous substances, illegal human experimentation, and domestic poisoning. The judge set bail at ten million dollars cash. He is going to prison for a very long time, Elena.”

I looked back at the glass, gripping my paper coffee cup so hard the cardboard crushed in my hand.

“Good,” I said, the timid, soft-spoken wife Mark had spent years suppressing finally disappearing forever. “Because if he ever comes near my daughter again, prison will be the safest place for him.”
