Chapter 4 - Tessa's PriceTessa Vale contacted me two days later.

I declined.
She called again.
I declined.
On the third attempt she sent one sentence:
Gavin isn't the person you should be most afraid of.
I agreed to meet.
Public restaurant.
Rebecca beside me.
Tessa arrived without makeup.
Without the confidence she wore at the hotel.
She placed a flash drive on the table.
“I want immunity.”
Rebecca almost laughed.
“We don't grant immunity.”
“I know.”
“Then talk to prosecutors.”
“They won't protect me unless I give them something.”
I looked at the drive.
“What is it?”
“Charles.”
Tessa had recorded him for two years.
Why?
Because she never trusted him.
That seemed to be the theme of everyone who worked with Charles Hart.
The recordings were devastating.
Charles discussed using Gavin's relationship with me to influence Hart Meridian.
He discussed hidden shares.
Forgery.
Manipulating board votes.
Then one recording made my hands cold.
Charles:
If Olivia objects after the wedding, we establish incapacity concerns.
Gavin:
What does that mean?
Charles:
Stress. Grief. Emotional instability. Whatever is necessary.
I stopped the audio.
My father had died after a long illness.
I had attended therapy for grief.
Charles intended to weaponize it.
Same old strategy powerful families had used forever.
Call the inconvenient woman unstable.
Take control while she defends herself.
I looked at Tessa.
“Did Gavin agree?”
She hesitated.
“No.”
That surprised me.
“He told Charles absolutely not.”
Tessa continued.
“That's when they started fighting.”
Another recording confirmed it.
Gavin:
You do not touch Olivia.
Charles:
Then control her yourself.
Gavin:
This was supposed to be financing.
Charles:
This was always about control.
I listened twice.
It did not redeem Gavin.
But it changed the shape of the betrayal.
He had entered the relationship dishonestly.
Participated in financial manipulation.
Approved the forged transfer.
Cheated.
But he had eventually drawn one line.
Too late.
Still real.
I asked Tessa:
“Why did you keep sleeping with him?”
She looked directly at me.
“Because I loved him.”
Honest.
Ugly.
I appreciated it.
“Did he love you?”
“Sometimes.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means he loved being with the person who knew what he'd done and didn't require him to pretend he was good.”
That answer stayed with me.
Tessa accepted a cooperation agreement with investigators.
She surrendered financial records and admitted Vale Strategy Partners was a pass-through entity.
She faced charges.
Not as serious as Charles.
But consequences.
Before leaving the restaurant, she stopped.
“I am sorry.”
“For the fraud?”
“For sleeping with him.”
I looked at her.
“Both would be ideal.”
She nodded.
“Both.”
I believed she meant it.
I did not forgive her.
May you like
Not then.
Forgiveness was not required for truth to be useful.
