Chapter 6 - My Mother’s Secret AccountMy father and Marcus were not the only ones involved.

Investigators found a trust account in Luxembourg.

Owner:

Victoria Montgomery.

My mother.

$17.4 million.

She had spent years presenting herself as the elegant wife who knew nothing about business.

Another lie.

She knew plenty.

She had been quietly moving money out of the family company while Dad and Marcus stole from everyone else.

The irony was almost impressive.

Three thieves.

Stealing from victims.

Then stealing from each other.

Mother’s account contained payments from the same inspector connected to Harbor Point.

When questioned, she claimed they were gifts.

Then investigators found an email:

Make sure Evelyn never sees the pension report. She asks too many questions.

My mother had known I suspected something.

That was why she pushed so hard to marry me off.

Not merely to save the company.

To remove me.

A husband old enough to control me.

A mansion far away.

Financial dependency.

Silence.

Except Alden Vale did not exist.

And Adrian had no intention of controlling me.

The marriage that was supposed to eliminate a witness—

gave that witness the safest place she had ever had to speak.

My mother was arrested two months later on financial charges.

When she saw me outside court, she whispered:

“I gave you everything.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

May you like

“You taught me exactly what I never wanted to become.”

Then walked past.
