Chapter 8 - The New Shore

Two years passed.
The divorce was finalized. Marcus had moved away to another state after his financial missteps caught up with him, leaving Sarah with sole custody and a fresh start.
Sarah was no longer the frazzled, anxious woman who had shut her front door in my face on a rainy Saturday. She had transformed into a confident, thriving woman who managed a team at her firm, held her head high, and laughed with a warmth I hadn't heard since she was a young girl.
One sunny afternoon in May, Sarah sat down across from me at the kitchen table with a folder in her hands.
"Mom," she said, her eyes shining with excitement. "I've been saving up from my salary over the last two years. I cleared my debt, and... I want to show you something."
She slid a printout across the table.
It was a real estate listing. A charming, two-story cape cod house sitting right on the coast of Oak Island, North Carolina—just a few miles from Myrtle Beach. It had a wraparound porch, a big backyard leading down to a wooden dock, and blue shutters that matched the dress I had worn two years prior.
"Sarah..." I gasped, looking up at her.
"I took out a mortgage entirely on my own," Sarah said, her voice filled with pride and emotion. "It's not as grand as the half-million-dollar gift you tried to give Tommy. But it’s mine. It’s ours. I bought it for us to grow old in together. I want you to come live with Tommy and me by the ocean."
Tears sprang to my eyes.

Two years ago, I had tried to buy my family’s happiness with a half-million-dollar check, only to be rejected at the door. Today, my daughter was offering me a home built with her own strength, hard work, and love.
"I would love nothing more," I choked out, reaching across the table to hold her hands.
