Chapter 2

Margaret took one slow step backward, keeping her hand firmly on the edge of the front door.

"This conversation is over," she said calmly. "You need to leave."

Vanessa didn't move.

Instead, she stepped inside.

"I deserve to be here more than you think."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"This is my son's home."

"No," Vanessa replied quietly. "It's the home he's too afraid to leave."

The words hung in the air.

Margaret reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

"I'm calling Ryan."

Vanessa's confidence faltered.

"No."

Margaret unlocked the screen.

"I've stayed quiet long enough."

Panic replaced calculation.

Vanessa reached instinctively toward the phone.

"Please, don't—"

Margaret pulled her arm away.

The movement carried both women closer to the staircase.

Neither noticed how little space remained behind them.

Vanessa grabbed Margaret's wrist.

"I said don't call him!"

Margaret tried to pull free.

"Let go of me."

For a split second, everything happened too quickly for either woman to think.

Vanessa shoved.

Not with the intention of causing irreversible harm—

only to create distance.

But force and gravity rarely negotiate.

Margaret lost her balance.

Her foot missed the next step.

Then another.

She fell backward down the staircase, striking the wooden steps before her head hit the floor below with a sickening sound.

Silence.

Complete.

The phone slid across the hardwood floor.

Margaret didn't move.

Vanessa stood frozen.

Her breathing became shallow.

"Oh my God..."

She hurried down the stairs, kneeling beside Margaret.

There was blood near her head.

No response.

No movement.

Vanessa's hands began to tremble.

"This wasn't supposed to..."

Before she could finish the sentence—

the front door opened.

"Mrs. Carter?" Emma called as she stepped inside with grocery bags.

"I found the—"

The bags slipped from her hands.

Fruit rolled across the floor.

She stared at Margaret lying motionless at the bottom of the stairs.

"Oh my God!"

Emma rushed forward without hesitation, dropping to her knees beside her mother-in-law.

"Margaret! Margaret, can you hear me?"

She gently touched Margaret's shoulder, then instinctively pressed her hand near the wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

When she pulled her hand back, it was stained red.

Vanessa looked at the blood.

Then at Emma.

Then at the front door.

A desperate thought formed with terrifying speed.

She reached toward Emma's arm, pretending to steady her, leaving more blood smeared across Emma's sleeve in the confusion.

Emma barely noticed.

She was focused entirely on Margaret.

"We need an ambulance!" Emma cried.

But before either woman reached for a phone—

the front door opened again.

Ryan.

He had come home earlier than expected.

His eyes immediately found the scene before him.

His mother unconscious.

Emma kneeling beside her.

Blood covering Emma's hands.

Vanessa standing nearby, visibly shaken.

For one suspended moment, no one spoke.

Then Vanessa burst into tears and stumbled toward Ryan.

He instinctively caught her.

She clung to him, sobbing.

"She pushed your mother!"

Ryan froze.

His eyes darted between the three of them.

Emma looked up, horrified.

"What?"

Vanessa buried her face against Ryan's shoulder.

"I tried to stop them..."

Ryan looked again.

Emma was still beside Margaret.

Her hands were covered in blood.

Margaret lay unconscious at the foot of the stairs.

Every visible detail seemed to point in one direction.

Emma stared at her husband in disbelief.

"Ryan... that's not what happened."

May you like

But the room had already become a place where appearances spoke louder than explanations.

And in that terrible moment, the truth and the evidence no longer looked like the same story.
