Chapter 5 - Confronting the Family Enabler

I walked firmly toward the door, motioning for Jessica and Olivia to step back into the hallway near the bedrooms. I flipped the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

Standing in the hallway was my uncle Arthur, a burly man in his late fifties with a permanent scowl, flanked by two younger cousins I barely spoke to.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, calling the cops on your own mother?!" Arthur barked, stepping forward as if he intended to push his way past me into the apartment.

I didn't budge an inch. I planted my feet in the doorway, blocking his entry entirely.

"Get out of my apartment, Arthur," I said, my voice cold and flat.

Arthur sneered, puffing out his chest. "Are you out of your mind, boy? Carmen is your mother! She raised you after your father passed! And you throw her out in handcuffs like a common criminal because your lazy wife can't handle a few dishes?"

"If you take one more step across my threshold, I'll call Officer Ramirez right back and have you arrested for trespassing and intimidation," I replied, pulling my phone out and holding it up with the dial screen ready. "My mother is facing multiple felony charges for child endangerment, identity theft, financial fraud, and elder abuse—though she's the abuser here. And if you or any other member of this family interferes with the police investigation, you'll be joining her in a holding cell."

Arthur blinked, the aggressive bluster instantly draining from his face. "Fraud? What are you talking about?"

I reached behind me and grabbed the open lockbox off the entryway console, holding it up so he could see the contents—the forged deeds, the stolen bank statements, and the leather journal.

"I'm talking about systematic theft and psychological torture conducted right under my roof," I said, locking eyes with my uncle. "She tried to steal this apartment out from under me, she drained our savings, and she forced my five-year-old daughter to do slave labor with boiling water while guests watched. You want to defend her? Be my guest. Tell the detectives downstairs that you support her criminal enterprise."

Arthur stared at the documents, his face turning pale. He took a slow step backward, the bravado completely gone. "I... I didn't know anything about this..."

"Then I suggest you and your sons get in your car and drive away before I decide to show these files to the financial crimes unit regarding your family's previous business ventures," I bluffed, though at this point, I would have investigated anything to protect my home.

Arthur didn't say another word. He shot one last terrified look at the lockbox, muttered something to his sons, and practically jogged toward the elevators.

I slammed the door, locked every single deadbolt and chain, and let out a long breath I felt like I had been holding for a year.

Jessica walked up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist and pressing her face into my back. I turned around and wrapped my arms tightly around both her and Olivia, who had wandered back out to join us.

"It's over," I whispered into the quiet space of our home. "They're gone. We're safe."

Over the next week, the legal storm raged, but we were finally on the winning side. Officer Ramirez and the district attorney's office moved swiftly. With the contents of the hidden lockbox, the digital flash drive (which contained incriminating emails between Carmen and a corrupt notary public), and the statements from Jessica and me, the case against my mother was airtight.

Carmen was denied bail due to flight risk and the severity of the charges, including child endangerment and grand larceny. Her defense attorney tried to plead age and health, but the medical reports documenting Olivia's burned hands and Jessica's chronic stress and injuries ensured that the judge remained unsympathetic.

Friends who had once attended her parties suddenly developed selective memory or claimed they had been coerced into attending under false pretenses. The social web my mother had woven around herself disintegrated overnight.
