I watched my 4-year-old daughter smile as the waitress handed her a cupcake.

Seconds later, my mother-in-law slapped it from her hands and shoved her to the floor.

Lily cried beside the smashed cupcake.

“Grandma said I’m not supposed to celebrate with the family.”

My stomach dropped.

It was my sister’s wedding reception, and I had stepped away for less than five minutes.

Diane folded her arms.

“She grabbed dessert before dinner. I corrected her.”

“You pushed a four-year-old child.”

“She needs discipline.”

Diane reached down and grabbed Lily’s arm.

I slapped her hand away.

“Don’t touch my daughter.”

Diane shoved me.

So I slapped her hard across the face.

The entire reception went silent.

“You think you can humiliate my child and walk away?”

My sister stormed over in her wedding dress, picked up an untouched cupcake, and smashed it against Diane’s expensive gown.

“You said Lily doesn’t belong at our celebration?” she snapped. “Then neither do you.”

My husband rushed across the room, lifted Lily into his arms, and looked at his mother with disgust.

“You’re finished, Mom.”

Security grabbed Diane by both arms.

She kicked and screamed as they dragged her through the crowded reception—the same guests she had tried to impress watching every second.

Outside, the doors slammed in her face.

Diane pounded on the glass.

“Let me back in!”

Lily wiped away her tears.

My sister handed her another cupcake.

Then my husband closed the curtains, leaving Diane outside alone.
