Chapter 7 - The Woman in the Photograph

The woman in the photograph had Daniel’s narrow chin, dark eyebrows, and habit of holding one shoulder higher than the other. She stood beside Lenora in front of a brick building, both of them looking at the camera without smiling.

The message beneath the picture contained only an address.

Daniel recognized the building before he recognized the woman.

“Safe Harbor Placements,” he said.

Detective Sloan met us outside the agency. The sign above the entrance had been removed, leaving a pale rectangle on the brick. The windows were covered with paper, but someone had recently swept the front steps.

The woman from the photograph opened the door.

She was taller than Daniel and older by several years. A white scar crossed her left eyebrow. When she saw him, her face tightened with an emotion that was not surprise.

“You took your time,” she said.

Daniel could not speak.

“I’m Rebecca,” she continued. “Your sister.”

He moved backward as if she had struck him.

Rebecca invited us inside. The agency had closed two years earlier, but its files remained in cabinets along the walls. A single desk lamp illuminated dust and paper. Rebecca carried a cardboard box to the desk and placed it between us.

“Lenora told you I died,” she said. “She told me you died.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened. “She never told me you were sent away.”

“She told me you were the reason.”

The words changed the air.

Rebecca explained that when she was an infant, Lenora had claimed Rebecca cried constantly, refused to feed, and frightened her. A social worker believed Lenora’s account and approved a temporary placement. Before the placement ended, Lenora signed papers allowing another family to adopt Rebecca.

“She said I had a disease,” Rebecca said. “Not a physical one. She told the agency I was born dangerous.”

“Why would she do that?” Daniel asked.

“Because your father wanted another child, and she didn’t.”

Rebecca opened the box. Inside were copied case notes, letters, and photographs. One photograph showed a much younger Lenora holding baby Rebecca. Her expression was bright, almost triumphant.

Another picture showed Daniel at nine years old, standing beside an empty crib.

“Your father tried to find me,” Rebecca said. “He learned the adoption was permanent and threatened to leave Lenora. Three months later, he died.”

Daniel’s face went blank. “The accident.”

“There was no accident report in the agency file. Only a note from Lenora saying he had become unstable.”

Detective Sloan examined the documents. “How did Elise find you?”

Rebecca looked at me. “She didn’t. I found her.”

“When?” I asked.

“Six months ago. Lenora had been calling me, telling me she had another grandchild coming. She wanted me to sign a statement saying Elise was dangerous.”

Daniel’s hands curled over the edge of the desk. “You helped her?”

“At first.”

Rebecca admitted she accepted Lenora’s money and pretended to cooperate. She wanted access to the old files. She sent Elise the first warning about Lenora’s custody plans, but Elise never told Daniel because she feared he would confront his mother before there was proof.

“I sent the hidden messages,” Rebecca said. “But I did not send the one from Elise’s phone.”

“Who did?”

Rebecca took another photograph from the box. It showed Lenora outside a fertility clinic, speaking to a man in a gray suit.

“The donor wasn’t anonymous to her,” Rebecca said. “He was a patient connected to a private genetic study.”

Daniel stared at the photograph. “Who is the man?”

“Dr. Martin Vale.”

My stomach dropped. Vale was my last name.

Rebecca looked directly at me. “He is your father.”

The room fell silent.

“My father died when I was twelve,” I said.

“That is what Lenora wanted you to believe,” Rebecca replied. “He was the geneticist who ran the compatibility program. And Owen’s donor was not a stranger.”

She placed a sealed report on the desk.

“The donor was Martin Vale’s son.”

Daniel looked at me, horror widening his eyes.

May you like

The report named the donor.

It was my younger brother, Caleb.
