Chapter 10 - The Brother No One Mentioned

Gabriel Ruiz agreed to meet at a diner beside the marina. He arrived in a mechanic's jacket, with grease under his fingernails and my father's eyes.
He recognized me immediately.
“You look like him,” he said.
“So do you.”
He smiled without pleasure. “That is what your mother said when she came to see me.”
“She knew where you were?”
“She has always known.”
Gabriel's mother, Elena Ruiz, had been my father's assistant during the year before I was born. Alejandro had loved her, according to Gabriel. When Diana discovered the affair, she threatened to expose Elena's immigration status and take her job. Alejandro paid child support but never acknowledged Gabriel publicly.
“Why didn't he tell me?” I asked.
“Maybe he was ashamed.”
“Maybe he wanted to protect me.”
“People call cowardice protection when they are trying to sleep at night.”
The words landed because I had been thinking the same thing about myself.
Gabriel gave Mara a packet of letters. “Your father sent these to my mother. Diana intercepted some of them. The last one said he was planning to introduce me to you after your thirtieth birthday.”
“Why then?”
“He said the trust would make our relationship complicated if people thought I wanted money.”
“Did you?”
Gabriel shrugged. “I wanted a father.”
He told us that Diana had visited him two months before my wedding. She offered money in exchange for keeping quiet.
“I refused. Then she said if I came forward, she would tell you I was using you.”
“That sounds like her.”
“She also said your father had signed a document denying I was his son.”
Mara showed him the birth certificate and letters. Gabriel read them slowly.
“She lied.”
“Yes.”
He folded the papers. “I wish I were surprised.”
The marina manager remembered seeing Esteban three nights earlier. He had rented a boat and gone onto the lake after dark.
“He may have hidden evidence there,” Mara said.
We searched the boat with a warrant and found a waterproof case beneath the floorboards. Inside was a passport, cash, and a flash drive containing video files.
The files showed Esteban meeting with Diana in a hotel room. He accused her of hiding money from him. She accused him of using my father's death to increase his own fees.
“You said the transfer would be clean,” Diana shouted.
“You were supposed to keep Valeria compliant.”
“I kept her compliant for twenty-nine years.”
“And now she has a friend with a microphone.”
The final file showed Esteban alone. He spoke directly to the camera.
“If Diana turns on me, the backup is at the lake house. She knows where. I do not.”
The recording ended.
“He made a confession video,” I said.
“A threat video,” Mara corrected. “It may still help.”
Julián arrived at the marina before sunset. He had been working with Celia and had agreed to testify about the documents Diana sent him.
“I found the camera footage,” he said. “There is another file.”
He gave Mara a memory card.
The video showed Julián in Diana's house on the night of my father's death. He was younger, frightened, and standing beside Esteban.
“I was there,” he said. “I didn't know about the medication. Esteban called me after your father collapsed. He told me to move the chair because it looked like a fall.”
I stared at him.
“You touched the scene.”
“Yes.”
“You knew something was wrong.”
“I knew Esteban was lying. I didn't know how serious it was.”
“And you stayed with me.”
“Because I loved you. Because I was ashamed. Because I thought if I protected you from the truth, you would be safe.”
“You all used the same excuse.”
He nodded. “I know.”
My anger was so large it became quiet.
“I cannot marry you.”
“I understand.”
“I may never trust you again.”
“I understand.”
“Stop saying that.”
He swallowed. “Then tell me what to say.”
“Nothing. For once, let me decide what happens next without trying to make it easier for you.”
He left without arguing.
Gabriel watched him go. “You loved him.”
“I did.”
“That does not mean you owe him a future.”
“I know.”
Gabriel smiled faintly. “You sound like you are learning.”
At midnight, the flash drive produced one final image: a map of the lake house grounds with a red mark beneath the greenhouse.
A note was written across the bottom.
The backup is where Diana buried the truth.
Mara called the district attorney. Before she could finish, the lights at the marina went out.
May you like
Across the water, a small boat started its engine.
Someone was heading toward the lake house.
