Chapter 4 - The Escalation

The realization that they were facing real legal consequences didn't make my family surrender; it made them desperate.

On Thursday evening, I was cooking dinner with Khloe when the security app on my phone chimed. The camera at my front gate captured a silver sports car pulling up aggressively onto my driveway.

It was Tyler.

He slammed his car door, his face flushed red with rage, and marched toward my front door. I immediately grabbed my phone, pressed the panic alarm button linked to the local police station, and locked Khloe in the master bedroom, telling her to stay quiet.

Tyler began pounding on my front door, shaking the heavy oak frame.

"Emily! Open the damn door!" he roared, kicking the lower panel. "You think you can ruin my life? You think you can throw me out on the street? You're a fake, crazy bitch!"

I stood in the hallway, five feet from the door, holding my phone up to record him through the digital peephole. "Tyler, the police have already been dispatched. You are trespassing and committing dynamic destruction of property. Leave now."

"I'm not going anywhere until you sign the papers to drop the bank investigation!" he screamed, slamming his fist against the glass side panel, cracking it. "Mom is going to jail because of you! You ruined this family!"

"You ruined yourselves," I replied, my voice steady through the intercommunication speaker. "You chose to leech off a single mother and starve a nine-year-old child. You have two minutes before the precinct cruisers arrive."

Instead of leaving, Tyler lost all control. He sprinted to his car, pulled a steel tire iron from his trunk, and returned to my porch, aiming the iron at my large living room window.

Before he could swing, two police cruisers swerved into my driveway with lights flashing and sirens blaring. Officers leaped out with drawn weapons, screaming at Tyler to drop the weapon.

Tyler dropped the tire iron, looking panicked as the officers tackled him to the lawn, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

I stepped out onto the porch, phone still recording, as the lead officer pulled Tyler to his feet.

"Are you Emily?" the officer asked.

"I am," I said clearly. "I have full video and audio footage of him threatening my life, attempting to break down my front door, and smashing my front window with a deadly weapon. I am pressing full criminal charges."

Tyler glared at me, his face pressed against the hood of the police cruiser. "You're a monster, Emily! You're putting your own brother in jail!"

"You put yourself in jail, Tyler," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "Enjoy the food in there. I hear it’s free."

That night, Tyler was booked for felony attempted burglary, criminal mischief, terroristic threats, and felony stalking. Because of the severity of the charges and the clear video evidence, the judge set his bail at $50,000 cash—money my parents did not have.
