Chapter 4 - The Legacy Awakens

Before the two guards could take a single step toward me, Dr. Hart moved with astonishing speed. She pulled a small, modified distress beacon from her coat pocket—an invention of her own—and smashed it against the metal workbench beside her.
A blinding flash of magnesium light burst through the dim laboratory, accompanied by an deafening, high-pitched acoustic wave that echoed off the concrete walls. The two guards shrieked, clutching their ears and covering their eyes as they stumbled backward. Even Victor Vance recoiled, dropping his cane and cursing aloud as he covered his face.
"Leo, run!" Dr. Hart yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward a small emergency exit at the far side of the chamber.
We bolted through the narrow steel doorway just as the guards recovered their senses. Heavy footsteps echoed behind us, along with the sharp metallic sound of gun holsters being unclipped.
"Through here!" Dr. Hart shouted, pulling me into a secondary storage hallway lined with electrical junction boxes and high-voltage warning signs.
We slammed the reinforced door behind us and slammed the manual locking bar into place. Seconds later, a heavy thud slammed against the outside of the door, followed by Victor's furious voice through the intercom speaker on the wall.
"You're trapping yourselves in a dead end, Amelia! That blast door will hold for ten minutes at most before my men cut through it with an acetylene torch! Give me the notebook, and I'll let the boy walk away!"
Dr. Hart ignored him, frantically looking around the secondary chamber. "There's no other way out, Leo. The secondary exit was blocked by a cave-in five years ago."
I looked down at the leather notebook in my hands, then at a massive, rusting control panel sitting in the center of the emergency room. On the panel was a circular keyhole shaped strangely like a three-pronged star, surrounded by complex numerical dials.
"Dr. Hart," I said, my mind racing as adrenaline surged through my veins. "Look at this panel. The symbols match the drawings in my dad's notebook!"
She rushed to my side, shining her flashlight beam onto the brass interface. "The auxiliary power interface... Arthur built this to power the entire mill in case of an emergency."
"No," I said, flipping through the yellowed pages of my father's notebook with frantic speed until I landed on a page marked PROJECT AETHER: FAIL-SAFE RECTIFIER. "He didn't build it just to power the mill. He built it as a security lock. Look at the equation here—it's not a password. It's a frequency code!"
My hands flew over the numerical dials on the panel. For months, I had spent every evening after school studying advanced harmonic physics, trying to understand why my small science project was able to light an LED bulb without a battery. Now, everything I had taught myself clicked into place with horrifying clarity.
My father hadn't just created an invention; he had created a mathematical language based on natural resonance. The values on the dials weren't numbers—they were musical frequencies and electromagnetic wavelengths.
"The resonance of silver... 432 Hertz," I muttered, spinning the first dial until it clicked loudly into place. "The magnetic core pulse... 1.618—the golden ratio!"
Behind us, the violent sparks of a cutting torch began to shower from the edges of the heavy steel blast door. The metal was already turning a deep, glowing cherry-red as Victor's men began slicing through the hinges.
"Leo, hurry!" Dr. Hart urged, standing near the door with a steel pipe she had ripped from the wall, ready to defend me with her life if necessary.
"Third component... the genetic key," I breathed, looking at the final interface on the panel. It wasn't a keypad at all—it was a copper plate shaped like a human hand, connected to two glass tubes filled with a strange, glowing blue conductive liquid.
"What is that?" Dr. Hart asked, glancing back over her shoulder.
"It's a bio-electric reader," I realized. "It measures the specific electrical capacitance of the human body. Dad designed it to respond to his bloodline!"
I slammed my palm onto the cold copper plate.
For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The smell of burning steel filled the hallway as the blast door's top hinge gave way with a sickening metallic snap.
Then, deep beneath our feet, the ground began to tremble.
A low, humming sound—so deep it vibrated through my teeth and made my chest ache—erupted from the main laboratory. The glass tubes on the control panel suddenly ignited with a brilliant, shimmering azure light. The conductive liquid roared through the copper coils above our heads, racing along thick cables that stretched out into the main facility.
Through the observation window in the blast door, we watched in awe as the massive glass sphere in the main lab burst into life. The brass and silver rings surrounding it began to spin at incredible speed, turning into a shimmering sphere of pure motion. A blinding beam of crisp white light shot upward from the sphere, passing straight through the ceiling and into the sky above.
The sudden surge of pure, unadulterated energy surged back through the facility's wiring. Instantly, the cutting torch in the guard's hand exploded in a shower of harmless harmless sparks as every electronic device brought into the building by Victor's men was instantly fried by an intense electromagnetic pulse.
The intercom cracked, followed by screams of panic from Victor's guards as their flashlights, radios, and equipment short-circuited all at once.
"What did you do?!" Victor's voice screamed through the dying speaker before it cut out entirely into static.
I took my hand off the copper plate, panting for breath. The control panel hummed with a gentle, warm energy, and the heavy blast door clicked unlocked from the inside, its electronic locks overridden by my father's system.

"I didn't just activate it," I said, looking down at my father's handwriting in the notebook. "I just broadcast its signal to every scientific monitoring station within a hundred miles."
