Chapter 8 - The Verdict

"The board has already voted, Julian," Marcus said, laying a thick manila folder on the table. "Unanimously. Your assets have been frozen, your debts called in, and your name stricken from the family registry. By midnight, you will be on a flight to a country of our choosing, never to set foot in Philadelphia again."

Julian stared around the room. The guards stepped closer, their hands resting naturally near their holsters. There was no escape. The empire he had tried to steal had slammed its iron doors shut in his face.

"You can't do this," Julian hissed, backing away from the table as the guards grabbed his arms. "I'm family!"

"Family is earned, Julian," Dominic said coldly, turning his back on him as the guards dragged him toward the service exit. "You were just an expense we’re finally cutting."

When the heavy oak door clicked shut behind Julian, the dining room felt lighter, as if a toxic cloud had finally been swept out into the rainy Philadelphia night.

Dominic walked slowly toward me, stopping just a few feet away. For a moment, neither of us spoke. The hum of the kitchen refrigerators and the distant patter of rain against the glass filled the quiet space.

"Elena," Dominic said softly. "I owe you a debt that money can't fix."

"I just want to keep my job, Mr. Vale," I said, my voice steady. "And peace for my granddaughter."

"Your job?" Dominic raised an eyebrow, a flicker of dry humor touching his lips. "Elena, after yesterday, you are no longer folding linens in the basement. Effective immediately, you are the director of administrative services for all Veils properties. Your salary will be tripled, your health insurance fully covered, and a permanent college trust fund will be established for Norah."

I stared at him, stunned. "Mr. Vale, I... I don't know what to say."

"Say nothing," Dominic replied, turning toward the kitchen. "Just make sure the lemon cleaner stays locked in the supply closet."
