Chapter 5 - THE FILE THAT CHANGED THE DIVORCE

Naomi received the file on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

She was sitting at her kitchen table while Maisie colored beside her.
The envelope had no return address.
Inside was a copy of a private Mercer document.
Her name was on it.
NAOMI BENNETT — RISK ASSESSMENT.
She read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
The document had been created before Graham's wedding.
It described Naomi's financial situation.
Her employment.
Her apartment.
Her relationship with Maisie.
Her weaknesses.
And one sentence was highlighted.
Objective: Remove Naomi from parental influence before the wedding.
Naomi stopped breathing.
Someone had planned to remove her.
Not because of the divorce.
Not because of an argument.
Before the wedding.
She called Graham.
He arrived forty minutes later.
Naomi handed him the file.
“What is this?”
He read it.
His expression changed.
“I didn't know.”
“You need to stop saying that.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She pointed to the document.
“You trusted your family.”
“You trusted Vanessa.”
“You trusted people who were planning to separate me from my daughter.”
Graham lowered his head.
“You're right.”
Maisie looked up.
“Mommy?”
Naomi immediately smiled.
“It's okay, sweetheart.”
But it wasn't.
Graham sat beside them.
“I found the recordings.”
“What recordings?”
“The wedding.”
“The person who told Maisie to hide.”
“Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“But there's more.”
He explained Daniel Cross.
The hidden payments.
The Mercer trust.
The anonymous phone call.
Naomi listened.
Then asked:
“Who is Daniel Cross?”
“My father's former partner.”
“Why would he want me out?”
“I don't know.”
The doorbell rang.
Naomi froze.
Graham stood.
A man was waiting outside.
Late fifties.
Dark coat.
Umbrella.
He introduced himself as Daniel Cross.
Naomi's heart began pounding.
“I thought you'd come eventually.”
Graham stepped forward.
“You need to leave.”
Daniel smiled.
“I think you misunderstand.”
“I know exactly who you are.”
“No.”
“You know who I was.”
He looked at Naomi.
“I know who your family was.”
Naomi froze.
“My family?”
Daniel nodded.
“Your father knew mine.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“Everything.”
He handed her a photograph.
Naomi looked down.
It showed her father.
Graham's father.
Daniel.
And another man.
The photograph was taken twenty-five years earlier.
On the back was a handwritten sentence:
The inheritance was never supposed to belong to the Mercers.
Naomi looked at Graham.
“What inheritance?”
Daniel smiled.
“That's the question you've been asking without knowing it.”
He stepped backward.
“I'll let you discover the answer.”
Then he walked away.
Naomi stared after him.
Graham closed the door.
“What did he mean?”
She looked down at the photograph.
“I don't know.”
But deep inside, she felt something shift.
The wedding.
Maisie.
Vanessa.
The custody dispute.
The money.
Daniel Cross.
Her own family.
None of these things were separate.
Someone had been planning this for years.
May you like
And somehow, her daughter was at the center of it.
