Chapter 6 - The Family Chose Money

Celeste did not apologize.

That was the part Everett remembered most.

Even after the investigators separated everyone.

Even after Roland began blaming Celeste.

Even after Audra collapsed into tears.

Celeste maintained the posture of a queen.

When an investigator asked whether she understood the accusations, she replied:

“I understand that my son is destroying his family because of an unstable woman.”

Everett heard her.

For years, that sentence would remain in his memory.

Not because it hurt.

Because it finally freed him.

There was nothing left to misunderstand.

Celeste was not confused.

She was not protecting him.

She simply believed she had the right to control everyone around her.

The investigation expanded quickly.

The false psychological evaluation led authorities to Dr. Halpern, the physician who had prepared the report without properly examining Maren.

Roland’s communications exposed legal planning that had begun before Everett even left for Denver.

Audra’s messages showed she knew Bennett was sick.

The evidence became impossible to explain away.

Everett refused every request for special treatment.

Relatives called.

Business partners called.

Old family friends called.

“Think about the reputation.”

“Think about the company.”

“She’s still your mother.”

Everett gave everyone the same answer.

May you like

“I am thinking about my family.”

Then he hung up.
