Chapter 16 - A Family Meeting Without Gloria

The first family meeting took place around Eleanor's kitchen table. Gloria was not invited. Her absence made the room quieter, but not peaceful. Everyone had learned that silence could conceal an argument waiting to happen.

Frank began by placing a stack of documents in front of Michael and Sarah. "These are the remaining debts, the lien, and my statement for the court. Nothing is hidden."

Sarah reviewed the pages. "You could lose the house if the business fails."

"Yes."

"Then we need a backup plan."

"I know."

Patricia sat at the far end of the table. "I want the accounts to require two signatures. Mine and Sarah's. No family member should ever control money alone."

Sarah looked at her. "That is sensible."

"It is also necessary because of me."

"Because of Gloria," Sarah said.

"Because of what I allowed myself to become."

Michael arrived late, carrying a box of bakery samples. He set it on the counter and opened the lid. There were four small cakes, each made from Eleanor's recipe with a different variation.

"The orange one is closest," he said. "The others need work."

Frank tasted a corner. "Your mother would say the frosting is too sweet."

"She would say that about everything I make."

They laughed, and the laugh startled them. It felt like finding a living plant in a ruined room.

After dinner, Patricia asked Sarah to walk with her. They went to the porch where Eleanor had once grown basil in cracked pots.

"I am sorry for the things I said about you," Patricia said.

"Which things?"

"That you wanted Dad's money. That you were pushing him into a nursing home. That you thought I was too unstable to be part of the family."

"I was angry. I did say you were difficult."

"You were reacting to what I did."

"Both things can be true."

Patricia nodded. "I do not want forgiveness just because the investigation is over."

"It is not over," Sarah replied. "Trust takes longer than court cases."

"What do I do in the meantime?"

"Keep showing up. Do not demand a reward for it."

Patricia smiled faintly. "You sound like Eleanor."

"I sound like someone who listened to her."

Meanwhile, Michael found Frank in the study, holding the photograph from the family birthday. Eleanor's face seemed bright enough to step out of the paper.

"I have been angry with you," Michael said.

"You should be."

"I am also angry with Mom."

"You should be careful with that anger."

"Why?"

"Because she cannot answer it."

"Neither could you for six years."

Frank looked down. "I thought if I made her death simple, I could survive it."

"You made us all live inside the simple version."

"I know."

Michael sat across from him. "I am not promising everything is fine."

"I would not believe you if you did."

"But I am not leaving you alone with the debt."

Frank's eyes filled. "Your mother would have liked that."

"She would have told us to put it in writing."

The next week, they signed a partnership agreement for Eleanor's Table. The name had belonged to a catering license that expired after Eleanor's death, but the county approved the new registration. Every family member received a defined role. Daniel agreed to design the delivery routes for the first three months, insisting that he needed to learn the city again.

Patricia wrote a public letter to Gloria, which she did not send.

You taught me to confuse protection with possession. I am learning that a person can love me and still lose the right to direct my life.

She folded the letter into Eleanor's recipe book.

Michael saw it there. "Are you keeping it?"

"For me."

"Good."

That evening, he asked Patricia to meet him at the apartment. She arrived with no expectations and left her phone on the table.

"I want to try counseling together," Michael said. "Not to save the marriage quickly. To find out whether there is a marriage worth saving."

Patricia's eyes filled. "I accept."

"And we continue living separately."

May you like

"I accept that too."

They sat quietly, close enough to touch and wise enough not to.
