Chapter 8 - the blue ribbon pouch Richard kept

Ben did not tell Ella or Tyler about Michael’s child.

Not yet.

This belonged to adults until facts existed.

Leonard brought out a metal box.

Inside were old photographs, letters, and race ribbons.

At the bottom lay a faded blue cloth pouch.

Almost identical in color to Ella’s medal pouch.

Ben touched it.

“My dad had one like this?”

Leonard nodded.

“All three runners did.”

Richard.

Michael.

Karen.

The pouch had belonged to Michael.

Inside was a state championship medal.

Gold.

Ben stared.

“Why did Dad leave this with you?”

“Because Karen tried to throw it into Silver Lake after Michael died.”

Ben felt a chill.

The pattern was forty years old.

Medal.

Trash.

Erasure.

Karen had not invented the gesture with Ella.

She had repeated it.

Leonard continued.

“Michael was offered a scholarship. Karen wanted him to stay.”

“He left?”

“Yes.”

“She went back to Dad?”

“Eventually.”

“Pregnant?”

Leonard nodded.

“Richard knew the baby might be Michael’s.”

Ben stared.

“And still married her?”

“Richard loved her.”

A sentence full of tragedy.

“What happened to the child?”

“Karen left Savannah for several months. Came back alone.”

“She said the baby died?”

“Yes.”

“Did Dad believe her?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Leonard opened a letter.

Richard’s handwriting.

Lenny,

Karen lied about the hospital. There is no death record matching what she told me. I don’t know where the child went.

Ben felt cold.

“Dad searched?”

“For years.”

“Why didn’t he tell Diane and me?”

“Because he never had proof.”

Ben looked at the payments from KMB Consulting.

“Why has Mom been sending you money?”

Leonard laughed bitterly.

“She hasn’t.”

“What?”

“KMB isn’t Karen Bennett.”

“Then who?”

“Kevin Michael Bennett.”

Ben froze.

Michael’s full name had been Kevin Michael Bennett.

Everyone called him Michael because his father was also named Kevin.

KMB Consulting belonged to someone using Michael’s initials.

But Michael was dead.

Leonard opened another file.

KMB Consulting’s owner, Leonard explained, was not himself.

He only allowed the mailing address.

The company belonged to—

Kevin Bennett Jr.

Ben stopped breathing.

“My uncle had a son.”

Leonard nodded.

Alive.

Fifty-one.

Living in Oregon.

Karen’s first child.

The baby who supposedly died.

Ben struggled to process it.

“So Mom gave him away?”

“Adoption.”

“Did Dad know?”

“Not until much later.”

“Did Michael?”

Leonard’s expression darkened.

“He found out shortly before his boating accident.”

Ben stared.

“Are you saying Michael died after discovering his son?”

“Yes.”

“Was the accident suspicious?”

“I don’t know.”

Leonard had spent forty years asking the same question.

Michael died when his boat capsized during a storm.

No evidence of foul play.

But Richard never fully accepted it.

Afterward, he inherited Silver Lake.

Then separated the northern parcel.

Why?

Because Michael had once written that if anything happened to him, Leonard should hold part of the lake “for the boy.”

Ben stared toward the water.

Kevin Bennett Jr.

His cousin.

Tyler and Ella’s older relative.

Karen’s secret firstborn child.

“What does Mom’s trust money have to do with him?”

Leonard explained KMB Consulting had recently received payments because Kevin threatened to reveal his identity.

Ben frowned.

“Blackmail?”

“Kevin calls it repayment.”

“For what?”

“For being erased.”

Ben disliked the distinction.

Money taken from children remained wrong regardless of grievance.

“Has he been here?”

“Twice.”

“When?”

“Last month.”

Just before Karen forged the Silver Lake sale documents.

Ben understood.

Karen had not only been trying to rescue Diane from debt.

She may have been trying to generate enough money to deal with Kevin.

Then Leonard said something stranger.

“Kevin doesn’t want cash anymore.”

“What does he want?”

“Silver Lake.”

Ben stared.

“Why?”

“Because Michael left something there for him before he died.”

“Where?”

Leonard looked toward the main Bennett cabin across the lake.

May you like

“In the old boathouse.”

👉 Karen’s secret firstborn son was alive, had recently returned, and believed Michael left him something hidden at Silver Lake before his fatal boating accident.
