Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Web

The reporters exploded into a frenzy of questions.
"Did you say murder?!"
"Mr. Sterling, what is your response?!"
"Is Vance-Sterling under federal investigation?!"
Richard took a step back, looking frantically toward his legal team. "This is insane! She’s hysterical! She's grieving!"
"I am not hysterical, Richard," I said, my voice icy and calm. "I am prepared."
Gabriel stepped forward, unlatching his briefcase and pulling out thick bound stacks of audited financial statements, along with copies of the forensic mechanical report.
"These are the original bank records from Swiss and Cayman accounts managed by Richard Sterling," Gabriel stated, holding the files up for the journalists and state investigators. "They show forty-two separate wire transfers totaling twenty-eight million dollars drained from Vance-Sterling Logistics over a four-year period."
"Fake!" Richard screamed, his face red and sweating profusely. "Fabricated documents!"
"And this," Gabriel continued, pulling out a sealed digital storage case, "is the full, un-redacted audio recording from the mechanic who altered the brake lines on Julian Sterling's vehicle three years ago. Along with the digital signature of the offshore bank account that sent twenty thousand dollars to that mechanic two days before the crash—an account directly tied to Richard Sterling’s personal tax ID."
Martha let out a horrific, mournful wail from her wheelchair, burying her face in her hands. "Oh God, Richard... what did you do?! What did you do to your own brother?!"
"Shut up, Mother!" Richard roared, losing all restraint. "You don't know anything! I built this family! I saved this company!"
"You destroyed it," Arthur Sterling's voice echoed from the front doorway of the mansion.
The heavy oak doors opened slowly. Supported by two nurses, Arthur stepped out onto the porch. He was pale, but his posture was upright, his eyes burning with an intense, righteous anger.
"Father..." Richard stuttered, taking a step back.
"I stayed quiet for three years because I was afraid of the shame you would bring to our name," Arthur said, his voice trembling with profound sorrow and fury. "I was a coward. I let my daughter-in-law suffer. I let my grandson grow up without knowing the truth about his father's greatness. But no more."
Arthur raised his cane, pointing it directly at Richard’s chest.
"I have already turned over the key to the family vault to the District Attorney," Arthur declared. "Every asset I possess, every share of Sterling Enterprises, is hereby stripped from Richard and transferred unconditionally to Leo Sterling under Clara's sole guardianship. You are finished, Richard."
District Attorney Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Richard Sterling," the prosecutor said sharply, "you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, conspiracy, and first-degree murder in the death of Julian Sterling."
Richard looked wildly around the porch. The board members pulled away from him like he was poison. His lawyers closed their briefcases and stepped aside, refusing to meet his eyes. The cameras flashed continuously, capturing every angle of his humiliation.
Richard made a desperate, sudden dive toward the side steps of the porch, trying to break toward his SUV.
Two state troopers moved with lightning speed, tackling him onto the gravel driveway. The iron handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with a heavy, final snap.
As they hauled him to his feet, muddy and disheveled, Richard glared at me with pure hatred. "You ruined us!" he spat. "You ruined everything!"

I walked down the steps, stopping inches from his face. I looked him dead in the eye without a single trace of fear.
"Julian ruined you, Richard," I whispered softly. "He just used my hands to finish the job."
