Chapter 7 - The CourtroomSentencing came in January.

Helen testified first.
She described Chloe’s hands.
How the child did not cry.
How she waited for permission before accepting help.
Daniel testified next.
Not as hero.
As someone who had failed.
“I thought Mrs. Vale was controlling.”
“I did not understand how far she had gone.”
“I should have asked questions much earlier.”
Martin described the hidden debt.
How shame made him vulnerable.
Then Maya stood.
Her scars were visible.
She deliberately did not hide them.
“I lived by arithmetic.”
The courtroom became silent.
“If I spent money, what would Evelyn do?”
“If I disagreed, what would she tell Alex?”
“If Chloe cried, would dinner disappear?”
“If I called my husband, would something happen at his company the next morning?”
“I measured every ordinary decision against punishment.”
She looked toward Evelyn.
“I do not ask the court to make her suffer because I suffered.”
“I ask the court to recognize that fear does not become care simply because the person causing it says she loves you.”
Alex spoke last.
“For years, I thought keeping peace meant avoiding conflict.”
He looked toward Maya.
“What I actually avoided was truth.”
“My mother exploited that.”
“But I gave her the opportunity.”
He faced the judge.
“I love my mother.”
“I also support a sentence that protects my wife and daughter.”
“Those statements can exist together.”
The judge imposed six years in prison.
Three years supervised release.
Restitution.
Permanent restrictions on contact.
Evelyn lost her residence claim.
Every position in family trusts and charities.
An independent audit followed.
Before deputies escorted her away, Evelyn asked to speak.
“Everything I did was to stop this family being destroyed.”
Alex held up his father’s letter.
“Dad knew.”
Her face changed.
“He asked you to stop.”
For once, Evelyn had no answer.
Then she looked toward Maya.
“I never intended Chloe to be burned.”
Maya responded:
“You intended her to be afraid.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
May you like
Not an apology.
But the last excuse Maya needed to hear.
