Chapter 2 - The Guests Nobody Invited

Eleanor moved toward the foyer with the rigid dignity of a woman approaching a stage. She snatched a towel from the console and pressed it into Clara’s hands as though Clara’s ruined dress were an inconvenience she had been assigned to manage.“Fix yourself,” Eleanor hissed. “And do not say one word unless I tell you.”Clara did not answer. She took Tommy’s hand.David opened the door. Two women stood on the porch in dark police uniforms. One was broad-shouldered and gray-haired, with a badge clipped to her coat. The other looked younger, with a notebook in one hand and a body camera glowing on her vest.“Good evening,” the older officer said. “Is this the Eleanor Vance residence?”Eleanor stepped forward. “Yes. I am Eleanor Vance. Thank goodness you are here.”The younger officer’s eyes moved over the room: the spilled potatoes, the overturned chair, Clara’s stained hair, and Tommy’s small hand locked around his mother’s fingers.“We need to speak with everyone inside,” she said.“This is a family dinner,” Eleanor replied. “My daughter-in-law has been emotionally abusing me for months. She is unstable, and she has become increasingly aggressive.”David swallowed. “Mom—”“Do not interrupt me, David. I am trying to keep us safe.”The older officer introduced herself as Sergeant Ruiz. The other was Officer Han. Both asked to come inside. Eleanor hesitated just long enough for the hesitation to become visible.“Of course,” she said. “I have nothing to hide.”Clara almost smiled. Eleanor’s favorite sentence had always been spoken as a challenge, never as a fact. The officers entered. Ruiz asked whether anyone needed medical attention. Eleanor pointed toward Clara.“She has been drinking,” Eleanor said. “She attacked me verbally, threatened to destroy my family, and then staged this mess to make me look guilty.”“I have not been drinking,” Clara said.“You see?” Eleanor cried. “She cannot control herself.”Officer Han turned to Tommy and crouched so they were eye to eye. “Are you hurt?”Tommy shook his head.“Did anybody hurt you?”He looked at Clara. She did not nod or shake her head. She simply kept her expression calm.“No,” he said. “But Grandma threw dinner.”Eleanor made a strangled sound. “He is confused.”“He seems clear,” Ruiz said.David walked to the table and began gathering napkins. His hands were shaking. Clara watched him avoid looking at the potatoes on the carpet.“Maybe we can handle this privately,” he said. “My mother is upset, and Clara has been under a lot of pressure.”“That is exactly what abusers say,” Eleanor answered.Han asked everyone to remain in separate parts of the room. Eleanor objected loudly, then obeyed when Ruiz repeated herself. Tommy sat beside Clara on the sofa while David stood near the fireplace.“Are you here because of the noise?” Eleanor demanded.“No.”“A neighbor called, didn’t they? The woman across the street has hated me for years.”“No one called us about a noise complaint.”Eleanor’s confidence flickered. “Then why are you here?”Ruiz took a folded document from an inner pocket. It was sealed in a clear plastic sleeve.“We are here in connection with an ongoing financial-crimes investigation.”The room seemed to contract around the words.David looked at Clara. She was sitting with Tommy’s head against her side, stroking his hair with one hand. Her dress was still stained. Her face was still composed.“This is absurd,” Eleanor said. “I am a respected property owner and a longtime donor to the county hospital.”“That does not answer the question,” Ruiz said.“What question?”“Whether you are Eleanor Vance.”“I already told you I am.”Han asked for identification. Eleanor reached into her purse, pulled out a leather wallet, and dropped it when she saw the officers watching her. The card slid across the floor.Ruiz picked it up and compared the photograph to Eleanor’s face.“Thank you.”Eleanor glanced at David. “Call Martin. He knows the district attorney. Or call my attorney. He will have this cleared up in five minutes.”David took out his phone. The screen lit his face, and for the first time Clara saw the message banner at the top. Jessica: Are you coming tonight? He turned the phone over.Clara said nothing.Eleanor began pacing. “This is harassment. Clara arranged this. She has been plotting against me since the day she married David.”“I have not arranged anything,” Clara said.“She wants my home.”Ruiz looked toward Clara. “Is this your home?”Before Clara could answer, Eleanor laughed. “Do not be ridiculous. The house belongs to me. I paid for it.”The older officer looked at the sealed document in her hand. “That is one of the matters we need to discuss.”Eleanor’s face drained of color.David stared at his mother. “What does that mean?”Ruiz opened the plastic sleeve but did not remove the paper. “Mrs. Vance, we have a warrant naming you. I need you to listen carefully and remain calm.”“A warrant?” Eleanor repeated.Tommy lifted his head from Clara’s shoulder.Eleanor’s gaze fixed on Clara. “You did this.”Clara wiped one last streak of potato from her jaw. “No,” she said. “You did.”
