Chapter 14 - WHAT JULIA HID FROM ALEXANDER

Rebecca agreed to cooperate only after prosecutors discussed charges involving unlawful experimentation on a minor.
Even then, she gave information selectively.
Julia had discovered Eleanor’s identity earlier than anyone knew.
She also discovered Lucas.
But instead of telling Alexander immediately, Julia contacted Lucas privately.
She wanted to know whether he could help dismantle Meridian.
Lucas agreed.
At least initially.
Rebecca claimed Julia began using Henry as an unwitting shield.
Alexander stood.
“No.”
Rebecca continued.
“She hid information where only Henry could lead you.”
The stuffed dragon.
The melody.
The memory.
Alexander hated hearing it framed that way.
Julia had protected evidence by placing clues around their child.
But she also trusted Alexander would eventually recognize them.
“What did she choose Henry over me for?”
Rebecca smiled weakly.
“The founder key.”
Alexander frowned.
Julia had discovered a control mechanism embedded within Cole Dynamics’ original infrastructure.
A cryptographic authority capable of locking Meridian out of large portions of the company’s network.
Eleanor wanted it.
Lucas wanted it.
Julia obtained it.
She could not trust any adult.
So she split the access pattern into pieces.
One was the black drive.
One was Julia’s melody.
One was hidden in Henry’s early childhood memories.
Alexander stared.
“You’re saying my son is part of a password.”
“Not intentionally.”
Rebecca claimed Julia designed a recovery sequence based on personal memories only Alexander and Henry would recognize.
That way no attacker could simply steal a written key.
After Julia died, Eleanor ordered Rebecca to reconstruct Henry’s memories.
That was why the drugs were used.
Not only to erase.
To weaken some memories and strengthen others through questioning.
Rebecca tried to extract the key.
Henry resisted.
“Why did Lucas visit?”
“To see whether the conditioning was harming him.”
Alexander laughed without humor.
“He ordered you to keep dosing.”
Rebecca’s face tightened.
“Lucas believes temporary harm is acceptable if it prevents Eleanor from taking him permanently.”
“Taking him where?”
“To Meridian.”
Alexander felt cold.
Lucas had apparently convinced Eleanor that Henry could become a future successor.
That protected Henry from immediate elimination.
But it also kept him inside the program.
Lucas was trying to save Henry by sacrificing pieces of him.
The same logic everyone in this story used.
Harm someone now to protect them from something worse later.
Alexander was finished accepting it.
Rebecca gave them Eleanor’s current location.
A private research estate in northern Virginia.
Federal agents prepared a raid.
Before leaving, Rebecca called Alexander back.
“Lucas will be there.”
“Good.”
“You don’t understand.”
“What?”
“He’s not there to protect Eleanor.”
Alexander stopped.
“He plans to kill her.”
Lucas intended to eliminate Grey before the transition.
Then assume control of Meridian himself.
Alexander understood.
This was not a rescue mission.
It was a succession fight.
At the estate, agents found security systems disabled from inside.
Two guards unconscious.
No gunfire.
Alexander entered behind the tactical team.
The central laboratory contained files, servers, and a glass conference room.
Eleanor Greyson sat inside.
Alive.
Calm.
Lucas stood behind her with a gun.
Alexander saw his older brother clearly for the first time.
Same family eyes.
Same jaw.
Different life.
Lucas looked at him.
“Little brother.”
Alexander felt nothing resembling reunion.
“Put the gun down.”
Lucas shook his head.
“If she lives, Meridian survives.”
“If you kill her and take her place, Meridian survives too.”
Lucas smiled.
“You understand quickly.”
Eleanor looked amused.
“He always did.”
Alexander stared at the woman who had entered his home and watched his son being drugged.
“You killed Julia.”
Eleanor answered without hesitation.
“Yes.”
Lucas’s expression changed.
Alexander looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
Eleanor laughed.
“He knew.”
Lucas tightened his grip on the gun.
“Stop.”
Eleanor continued.
“He knew the night it happened. He chose Meridian anyway.”
Alexander looked at Lucas.
His brother said nothing.
That silence told the truth.
Alexander felt the final illusion break.
Lucas was not trapped anymore.
Maybe he once had been.
Now he chose power.
Agents shouted commands.
Lucas pressed the weapon closer to Eleanor.
Then every monitor in the laboratory turned on simultaneously.
Julia’s face appeared.
Pre-recorded.
Alexander stared.
The founder key had activated remotely.
Her voice filled the room.
“If this message is playing, someone has attempted succession transfer.”
Eleanor’s calm finally disappeared.
Lucas turned toward the screens.
Julia continued.
“Meridian believes Cole Dynamics is its infrastructure.”
Then she smiled faintly.
May you like
“It isn’t.”
The entire building lost power.
