Chapter 11 - The Collector

Caleb Rusk agreed to meet in a private room at the Chicago Athletic Association, provided that no recording devices were visible.

“That is an odd request from a man who buys distressed debt,” Ethan said.

Rusk smiled. “Debt is information with an expiration date.”

He was lean, tanned, and dressed in a navy suit without a tie. Unlike Daniel, he did not perform confidence. He wore it as if it were a tool he could put down.

Adrian sat beside Ethan. Priya waited near the window.

“You financed Daniel Whitmore?” Adrian asked.

“I bought a loan from a private lender. Daniel was the borrower.”

“For $9 million.”

“Initially.”

“How much did he owe when you acquired the note?”

“Twenty-three million, including penalties.”

Ethan felt the number connect with the Larkspur loan.

“You knew about the terminal.”

“I knew Daniel had a problem. I did not know how he intended to solve it.”

“You sent the warning to Harbor Vale.”

Rusk leaned back. “I sent several warnings.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel promised me control of a company he did not own outright. When the sale approached, he tried to refinance the debt with inflated earnings. That violates every covenant in the loan.”

“You could have foreclosed.”

“Not if the collateral was tangled in a family trust and a company with thousands of employees.”

“So you waited.”

“I collected.”

Rusk placed a folder on the table. “Daniel made payments through North Lake. Peter arranged them. Owen disguised them. Melissa threatened anyone who asked questions.”

“How much?” Adrian asked.

“The documents you have show approximately fourteen million. The full amount is closer to thirty-two.”

Ethan’s breath caught. “Thirty-two million in what?”

“Transfers, rebates, inflated acquisition costs, and payments to people who were supposed to be independent.”

“Including you?”

Rusk gave a short laugh. “I was the one collecting the debt. I did not need to pretend.”

He slid a memory card across the table.

“This contains a recorded call between Daniel and Peter.”

Priya’s expression sharpened. “How did you obtain it?”

“Peter recorded it to protect himself.”

The file played through a small speaker.

Daniel’s voice was unmistakable. “The Harbor Vale money gets us clear. North Lake receives the first tranche, then routes it through the terminal account.”

Peter answered, “What if the board asks why Mother owns the property?”

“Mother owns the story. We own the exit.”

The recording ended with a chair scraping the floor.

Adrian looked at Rusk. “Why give this to us?”

“Because Daniel stopped paying me.”

“That is not justice.”

“I didn’t say it was.”

Outside, Ethan watched pedestrians cross Michigan Avenue beneath a wash of white headlights.

“He’s telling the truth,” Ethan said.

“Parts of it,” Adrian replied.

“What parts?”

“The part that helps him.”

At that moment, Priya’s phone rang. She listened, said nothing, and handed it to Ethan.

It was June Holloway.

“Ethan,” June said, breathing hard, “someone just entered the records office using your name.”
