Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web of Lies

I stood frozen in the middle of the dining room, Ellie’s phone clutched so tightly in my hand that my fingers ached. The audio had stopped playing, but the venomous laughter of Alana and Ellie seemed to linger in the air like poison smoke.

Property transfer.

Those two words echoed relentlessly in my mind.

I needed proof. Verbal scheming on a voice recording was damning, but in a legal battle, courts required tangible evidence of fraud, coercion, or conspiracy. If Parker had been drafting paperwork behind my back to alter the deed of my grandfather’s house, there had to be a paper trail.

My training as a senior financial analyst kicked in, overriding the shock and grief threatening to paralyze me. When you want to hide something digital, people always make mistakes. And where do people who think they are smarter than everyone else hide their digital secrets?

Right on their cloud-synced devices.

I looked down at Ellie’s phone. It was unlocked—or rather, it didn't require biometric ID because Ellie had set it to stay unlocked while connected to her home wireless network, which was still broadcasting our router’s signal.

I swiped out of the voice recorder app and opened her messaging apps.

My thumb hovered over WhatsApp and Telegram. I tapped WhatsApp first, scrolling straight to her most active chat thread at the top of the list: "The True Heirs 👑".

The group chat consisted of three members: Alana, Ellie, and Parker.

My breath caught in my throat as I tapped open the chat history and began scrolling upward, reading message after message that laid bare the entire depth of their betrayal.

(Parker (10:15 AM yesterday): "She’s working extra shifts all weekend at the firm. Perfect window. Mom, Ellie, make sure you guys settle into the house and start working on Dustin. If we make him miserable enough, Clarissa will spend all her time fighting with him instead of looking at the household financial statements.")

(Alana: "Don't worry about the boy. I put him in his place within an hour. He’s completely cowed. Did you check with the attorney about the quitclaim deed yet?")

(Parker: "Talked to him this morning. He drafted the updated deed making it a joint survivorship with sole spousal succession rights in the event of incapacitation or divorce separation clause modification. Once she signs it under the guise of 'routine estate tax restructuring,' the property is legally insulated.")

(Ellie: "Brilliant. And once that’s locked in, we can finally sell the main house parcel to fund my boutique expansion in Chicago, and Mom gets her retirement villa in Florida. Clarissa gets nothing because pre-marital assets folded into joint trusts lose individual standing after a three-year window in this state.")

I stared at the screen, my vision blurring with hot, angry tears.

They weren't just planning to steal the house; they had consulted a lawyer, drafted fraudulent legal instruments, and plotted out how to strip me of my ancestral inheritance down to the very last penny, using our marriage as a legal Trojan horse.

The "routine estate tax restructuring" paperwork Parker had brought home for me to sign two weeks ago flashed vividly in my memory. He had casually slid it across the kitchen island while I was rushing to make dinner, saying, "Hey babe, just sign this quick form for our annual property tax optimization. My accountant recommended it."

I had been so exhausted from working double shifts that I had set it aside on the counter, intending to review it over the weekend—the very weekend I decided to surprise them at the country house instead.

If I had signed those papers, I would have unknowingly signed away my legal ownership of the house my grandfather built with his own hands.

A cold, fierce anger replaced the shock in my chest. Grief was a luxury I couldn't afford right now. If Parker and his family wanted to play dirty legal games, they were about to discover that they had underestimated the wrong woman.

I opened Ellie’s email client, synced to her cloud drive, and found a folder labeled "Estate Project - Confidential". Inside were PDF copies of the drafted quitclaim deeds, communications with their conspiring attorney, and bank account routing numbers where they planned to divert rental income from the guest cottage on the property.

Without hesitation, I forwarded the entire folder, along with a full data export of the WhatsApp chat history, straight to my own secure encrypted email address.

Then, I took a screenshot of the active voice recording file, saved it to my cloud storage, and cleared my digital footprints from Ellie’s device so they wouldn't suspect anything had been intercepted—yet.

I walked back out to the dining table, placed Ellie’s phone exactly where I had found it between the chair cushions, and took a deep, steadying breath.

Dustin was waiting for me in the car. It was time to execute phase two.
