Chapter 4 - Arthur

The most painful evidence did not concern Lily.

It concerned my brother.

Arthur had survived the 1998 beating.

Barely.

After Montreal, child-protection authorities started asking questions.

Dad used lawyers.

Mom produced records claiming Arthur had severe behavioral problems.

Then they did something I still struggle to understand.

They sent him away.

Not boarding school.

A private residential treatment facility in Switzerland.

At eight.

Without telling me.

For years Arthur wrote letters home.

I never received them.

Investigators found copies in Mom’s cabinet.

One from age nine:

Rebecca probably thinks I left because I didn’t love her. Please tell her I didn’t.

I stopped reading.

I had spent childhood believing Arthur stopped writing because he did not care.

He wrote dozens of times.

Mom kept every letter.

Never delivered one.

At seventeen, Arthur left the facility.

At eighteen, he changed his surname.

He attended community college.

Worked restaurants.

Later lived in Zurich.

But the childhood trauma followed him.

Addiction.

Depression.

Repeated hospitalizations.

He died at twenty-two.

Accidental overdose according to Swiss investigators.

No evidence Dad killed him.

No conspiracy around his death.

Truth did not need embellishment.

My parents had already done enough.

Dad had beaten him.

Mom had hidden him.

Both erased him from our family so thoroughly that his little sister did not know where he was while he spent fourteen years trying to survive.

I sat beside Lily’s bed and read every letter Arthur wrote.

At the bottom of one:

When I grow up, I’m going to come get Rebecca.

He never did.

Not because he forgot.

Because the adults who should have protected us separated us so completely that two children grew up believing the other had disappeared willingly.

That night I cried for my brother for the first time.

Not the imaginary boarding-school brother.

Arthur.

The real boy.

The one with broken ribs.

May you like

The one who still remembered me.
