Chapter 4 - The Hunt for Evidence

Night had fallen over the city by the time Julian, Detective Miller, and a secondary officer arrived at the glass-fronted skyscraper that housed the headquarters of Apex Living. The streets below were bathed in the neon glow of traffic and city lights, a stark contrast to the dark, deserted executive suites on the top floor.

Julian tapped in the security code on the electronic keypad outside Vanessa's corner office. The lock clicked, and the heavy glass door swung open with a soft hiss.

"You're sure about this, Mr. Mercer?" Detective Miller asked, holding a flashlight with a gloved hand. "If her lawyer proves illegal search, anything we find could be tossed out."

"I am an authorized designer on this lease," Julian stated flatly, pointing to a framed brass plaque near the doorway listing Mercer Architectural Solutions as a partner firm. "I built the concealed storage wall in this room myself. I know where she hides what she doesn't want the auditors to see."

He walked straight toward a wall lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelf units. Passing his fingers over the third column, he found the subtle release catch he had installed four months ago when Vanessa asked for a "private security compartment for sensitive client files."

With a soft mechanical click, a panel of the bookcase swung outward, revealing a heavy, digital fireproof wall safe embedded in the concrete.

"She thinks she's smart," Julian muttered, staring at the digital keypad. "She uses dates that are significant to her ego." He typed in the date of their engagement—0812—followed by the day she launched her firm.

The safe beeped twice, and the lock mechanism retracted.

Detective Miller stepped forward, her camera flashing as she documented every angle before touching anything inside. When she pulled open the thick metal door, even the seasoned detective let out a low whistle.

Inside were stacks of velvet-lined jewelry boxes, physical ledgers stamped with the seals of various high-profile European estates, and several drives marked with dates. Julian reached in and pulled out a black leather notebook. Opening it, he found meticulous, handwritten notes in Vanessa's elegant script—listings of items taken, estimated black-market values, and names of private buyers in Zurich and London.

"She wasn't just stealing," Julian said, disgust lacing his words. "She was running an international fencing operation out of her management firm."

At the bottom of the safe lay a sleek silver hard drive labeled Vault Logs - Raw Backup.

"That's it," Miller said, carefully lifting the drive with gloved fingers. "If this contains the unaltered, raw timestamp logs from the vault security systems, it will prove that Elena Vance’s keycard was cloned or used while she wasn't even in the building. It completely destroys the prosecution's case against her."

Suddenly, the silence of the office was shattered by the sound of heavy footsteps and loud, panicked voices outside in the corridor.

Julian and the officers turned as the door burst open. Standing in the doorway was Vanessa's father, Arthur Sterling, a wealthy, powerful developer, accompanied by two high-priced defense attorneys in tailored suits.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur roared, his face red with fury. "You are trespassing in my daughter's private office! Julian, have you lost your mind? You abandoned my daughter at the altar for a hysterical child, and now you're breaking into her business?!"

Julian stood tall, stepping between Arthur and the evidence sitting on the table. He looked at his would-be father-in-law with pure pity.

"Your daughter isn't just a bride who got left at the altar, Arthur," Julian said coldly. "She's a thief. She's a extortionist. And in about one hour, she is going to be charged with multiple counts of grand larceny, evidence tampering, and obstruction of justice."

"You can't use any of that!" one of the lawyers shouted, pointing aggressively at Detective Miller. "This search is completely unauthorized! We will have you stripped of your badge!"

"Mr. Mercer is a legal co-tenant of this commercial contract," Detective Miller replied calmly, holding up a search warrant that had just been signed remotely by a night judge twenty minutes prior via her tablet. "And as of ten minutes ago, we had full judicial authorization based on the stolen item recovered directly off your client's neck at the precinct."

Arthur's mouth opened, but no words came out. The powerful, terrifying developer looked suddenly very old and very small.

Julian walked up to Arthur, stepping uncomfortably close. "I trusted her. My family trusted her. But what she did to an innocent woman and her child is unforgivable. Tell Vanessa that her wedding dress is in the trunk of my car. She can wear it to her arraignment."
